Commentary on audit results Becoming CO2 free™involves an ongoing commitment. Carbon Planet emphasises a philosophy of “reduce and then offset emissions” and in line with this, efficiency improvements are one of the easiest steps to take to re-duce emissions.
A comparison of the individual con-tributors to CO2e emissions revealed thatutilities contributed the greatest component of the total CO2e emissions evolved (1,031.4 tonnes, 37.8% of to-tal). The majority of the GHG emissions were attributed to electricity consump-tion, at 937 MWh per annum.
Freight of 9,745 tonnes of products contributed 533 tonnes of CO2e per year (19.5%) and this was the second biggest contributor to total GHG emis-sions.
The third largest contributor to emis-sions was aircraft transportation of staff, estimated at 469.2 tonnes of CO2e (17.2%). A total of 1,373,060 passengerkilometres were flown by staff during the auditing period. All remaining items contributed698.9 tonnes of CO2e or 25.6% of the total GHG emissions.
While there are still some initiatives that could assist to further reduce emis-sions, for example modern lighting technology, further reduction of general waste by recycling, and use of staff incentives to promote greater use of public transport, perhaps the most sig-nificant contribution that can now be made will be from the increasing pres-sure on partners and suppliers to also adopt a similarly progressive approach toward the goal of carbon neutrality. This will place downward pressure on Scope 2 and 3 emissions. Finally, pro-viding thought leadership is important and necessary to a successful carbon
neutral programme if Hitachi is commit-ted to be the change. Reporting Obligations Under Section 13 of theNational Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGER), Hitachi falls considerably below the minimum reportable corpora-tion threshold that applies in FY 2010-11 of 50 kilotonnes of CO2e per year, or the facility threshold of 25 kilotonnes of CO2e per year, for the initial three years of the reporting period. Therefore, the company will have no mandatory reporting obligations for the foreseeable future. As a indicator only, Hitachi’s potential liability for reporting under the NGER Act would be 0.99 kilotonnes of CO2e. Further details Section 1 of this report provides an introduction to some of the key terms and principles used in the audit. Detailed commentary on the results of the audit is contained in Section 2 andadditional recommendations are con-tained in Section 3. Volume II of the report contains a detailed description of the audit process and calculation methodology in accor-dance with the standards outlined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol in the Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (2004) and ISO 14064-1. Vol-ume I (this report) is based upon these standards and where necessary, should be read in conjunction with Volume II.
