There were a number of special meetings held in 1998, in addition to those of the
Working Groups. These were
Potato Conference, Brussels, organised by P. Boxus
Embryogenesis Conference, Dublin, organised by F. & R. Ó Ríordáin
Special meeting on Regeneration, Melle, organised by G.-J. de Klerk
InterCOST Conference, Edinburgh, organised by D. Atkinson
There were two Management Committee meetings and each Working Group had a
meeting, in addition WG 3 held a Workshop.
The following meetings took place:

During the year 16 Short Term Scientific Missions took place funded by COST 822.
The reports of these are included here. In connection with these, I wish to thank
Martin Ward, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, for the administration of this
fund.
There are now 2 sites with details of COST 822 on the Internet in addition to that of
the Commission
Thanks are due to the WG Coordinators and Meeting Organisers for the high standard
of the meetings and the book of abstracts provided to participants at all meetings.
COST 822 wishes to record it's sincere thanks to Hannes Schüepp, European
Commission, for his guidance and help during the year.

Minutes of the Management Committee Meeting
Brussels, Belgium
27 February 1998
1. Opening and welcome by the Chairman
F. Ó Ríordáin, Chairman, welcomed all to the Management Committee meeting and the
representatives of Luxembourg to their first meeting.
2. Approval of the Agenda.
The Draft Agenda was approved.
3. Approval of the Minutes of previous meeting
The Minutes of the Management Committee meeting of 19 October 1997, (Nitra)
were approved.
4. Status of the Action
H. Schiiepp, European Commission, gave details of the current status of the Action,
COST 822 has now 22 member countries.
The request of Romania to join COST 822 was approved unanimously.
The Committee unanimously endorsed K.-H. Neumann as a Coordinator of Working Group 5.
5. Reports of Working Group Coordinators
5.1 WG 1 - Physiology and Control of Plant Propagation in Vitro
P. Boxus gave details of the Potato Conference and the WG 1 meeting held in conjunction
with the Conference. He described Potato production Schemes in different countries.
The meeting congratulated P. Boxus on the magnificent organisation of the
Conference.
5.2 WG 2 - Plant Regeneration via Suspension culture systems
W. Preil reported on the proposed meeting of WG 2 at Erfurt and the plan to have a session
on Automation in Tissue Culture.
5.4 WG 4 - Molecular Aspects of Differentiation and Transformation
M. Laimer - a Working Group Meeting will be held in Chania, Greece, at the end of
September 98.
5.5 WG 5 - Mechanisms and Markers of Regeneration and Genetic Stability
G-J de Klerk - The Journal of Applied Botany resulting from the 1997 meeting held in
Rauischholzhausen, Germany, has been printed. 6. Interactions between COST Actions
A report was given by the Chairman of the Small Meeting held the previous day with a view to
initiating a Joint Working Group between 822 and 824 and plan an initial meeting for Dublin,
Ireland, Spring, 1998. A Management Committee meeting in conjunction with this meeting
was suggested.
An Organising Committee meeting will take place in Brussels in mid-January, those nominated
were N. Hammatt, G.-J. de Klerk, G. Reuther, M. Welander and F. Ó Ríordáin.
H. Schüepp - agreed to send details of new COST Actions to members of the MC.
7. Short Term Scientific Missions & Meetings
F. Ó Ríordáin gave information on the latest position on the Short Term Scientific Missions.
The second payment of 10,000 ECU was nearly used up and the third payment would be
applied for shortly.
Meetings
The Chairman reminded members of the advantages of Small Meetings.
8. Publications
9.1 Report of Activities for 1997
This was sent by the Chairman to Brussels in February for printing and circulation.
9.2 Survey of European Plant Tissue Culture Laboratories.
The Directory is being finalised and will be sent to the Commission for printing and
distribution
9. Next Meeting
It was agreed that the next meeting of the MC would be held in Chania, Greece, at the
invitation of S. Lionakos on 3 October 1998.
