Description
The rapid destruction of our archaeological heritage by the rationalisation of our countryside asks for a constant alertness. For budgetary reasons and because of lack of time the intervention of archaeologists in the field must be rapid and efficient. This requires a capacity to make reliable diagnoses in the field right from the beginning of an intervention. The conventional technical means (like the mechanical shovel) which are used by archaeologists are not always adequate for a good diagnosis, least at all in the case of Palaeolithic or Mesolithic sites where obvious structural features are rare. Therefore we recommend the use of systematic sampling by means of boring. The data from these borings are computerised for treatment by means of a Geographic Information System (GIS). Thanks to the Cumulative Probability Method the data of the borings and systematic surface collection can be used for an estimation of the size and the density of sub-soil concentrations. The method has the advantage of giving rather quickly fairly reliable estimations by means of relatively non-destructive sampling techniques.
