FOREWORD
The Lavrion workshop was the last in a series of workshops designed to bring inspiration and
insight to our project on "Medium-sized Cities and Socio-economic and Environmental
Improvements in the Regions of the EU". The project was initiated in 1993 with case studies
on four and, up to the end of that year, seven cities. A first meeting hosted by the city of
Kavala, one of the first to be studied under our study, brought together experts and
politicians from four cities. The following workshops of Alicante, Volos and Oviedo went
deeper into the issues of the research which up to the end of 1994 included 12 cities, three
more cities finally joined theh network by mid-1995. All 15 cities participated in at
least one workshop with their Mayors and the independent expert chosen by the Foundation.
Interviews were conducted with the city, State and Social Partners' representatives in each
of the cities and many of them were included in the publications of the Foundation with the
reports from the workshops of Alicante, Volos and Oviedo.
The research was enriched in 1994 with the development of sustainability indicators for each
of the cities of the network. Efforts for the developments of indicators are included in the
present publication following their discussion in Lavrion. Executive summaries from
concluded case studies presented in the workshop and additional interviews witnessing the
local dynamism and the creation of collective visions are also included. Contributions from
Greek officials and participants enriched the workshop and the present publication.
We would like to thank the Greek authorities for hosting and supporting the workshop and
all the participants for their active participation and insight.
Last but not least, we thank Ruben Bianchi from the International Association of City and
Regional Planners for his drawings which illustrate this publication.
