The Foundation initiated in 1991 a research project on the Enterprise and the
Environment. The aims of the project are:
— to point to new regional/local cooperation initiatives and their potential in
improving corporate environmental performance, environmental quality,
techical innovation, technology transfer and the economic development,
notably in the southern Member States, and to identify the obstacles to such
initiatives and the measures required to overcome them;
— to define the role of the various parties, including that of the social partners,
in this process;
— to contribute to a better implementation of environmental legislation,
particularly Community directives and regulations, within the framework of
development efforts, and to increased environmental awareness at the
regional/local level;
— to contribute to the implementation of Community policies and actions aimed
at sustainable development.
The research was developed in most Member States of the EU and included the
examination of cooperation initiatives, at the local level, among firms, regulatory
agencies, technical experts and the social partners. It focused on initiatives making
a valuable contribution to the improvement of corporate environmental
performance. Many of these initiatives were presented and discussed in a Round
Table organised in Rome, in late 1992, on 'Industry, Social Dialogue and
Sustainability'. A report on this Round Table was published in early 1993.
The reason for now publishing the report which details three exemplary cooperation
initiatives from Greece is because this project is very much about transferability
and replicability of cooperation schemes. Many countries, among them Greece,
were long classified as countries to where innovation should be transferred, as
countries not particularly strong as breeding grounds from which to transfer
innovation. The report outlines the Greek projects besides the ones identified at
the European horizon and highlights their strengths and weaknesses.
