III INTRODUCTION
The Permanent Inventory of AGricultural REsearch Projects (AGREP) is an information system on current projects
in agriculture and related fields in the Member States of the European Communities (Belgium, Denmark, Federal
Republic of Germany, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Portugal
and Spain). Its creation is based upon a regulation of the Council of Ministers of the European Communities concern
ing the coordination of agricultural research (Council Regulation No 1728/74 of 27 June, 1974).
AGREP covers agriculture in an extensive sense of the word, i.e. including fields like fisheries and forestry, land use
and development, conservation of nature, veterinary medicine, food sciences and technology, as well as agricultural
economics and rural sociology. A detailed scope description is given in the subject classification facets "fields of
research" and "subject areas" as presented on the introductory pages of the two printed volumes.
The AGREP data base is fully computerized. It is available in printed form and on magnetic tape. Online access is
offered via public datatransmission networks. The database is updated quarterly.
The 1990 issue of AGREP contains about 26,000 title citations of agricultural research.
AGREP is a cooperative system. The national focal points (NFPs) collect input and provide it in an agreed format to
the Commission who sponsors the management of the system and the provision of output to the Member Countries.
Then is advised by the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) and its sub-group, the
AGREP Advisory Board. Data processing and technical assistance are carried out by a contractor to the Commission.
The AGREP publication consists of two parts:
Part I contains the Main List with the titles (both in original languages and in English) of the research projects,
complemented by some basic information on each project, i.e. name(s) of researcher(s), country and research organiz
ation (in the Main List given as codes) and availability of publications.
Part II contains various indexes, i.e.
- a Subject Index which enables the identification of research projects relevant to a subject area.
- the List of Research Organizations sorted by country and within each country by hierarchic organization code (see
also Structure and use of the AGREP Main List, page X) The names of research organizations are completed by
postal address and referral number to those projects they are involved with.
- The List of Scientists contains the name(s) of the scientist(s)d in the research projects referred to.

V COVERAGE
In the table below is indicated the degree of coverage within the different subject areas as defined by the Standing
Committee for Agricultural Research (SCAR).
By coverage is meant the percentage of all current research projects on subject areas AΗ in a country, which arc
registered in AGREP. The figures should be viewed in conjunction with the notes following the table.
It should be noted, that the percentages are estimates and therefore subject to considerable uncertainty.
Percentage coverage of SCARrecommended subject areas for the 1990 AGREP Inventory.

Belgium
As f<it as possible all publicly financed research in relation to agriculture and executed in public and private institutions
is included in the AGREP coverage. For privately executed research particular in connection with industrial develop
ment the coverage remains low.
