Introduction from the Chair
We have launched the COST Chemistry Actions in 1991 and since the beginning the scientific
activities have been very successful and growing. Presently twenty two COST countries are actively
participating to the Chemistry Actions.
The COST Chemistry activities of the ongoing Actions so far corresponds to more than one hundred
projects in which more than six hundred research groups are involved in collaborative programs.
According to the information given by the participating groups, the total budget involved in
collaborative research in COST Chemistry is now reaching 300 MECU. As we indicated in the
previous report, this data must be interpreted carefully according to the difficulty in obtaining
homogenous information from all the different countries. Nevertheless once again it gives an idea of
the impressive and probably unique level of the collaborative research under the way within the
COST Chemistry. The seven first Actions (D1-D7) are now coming to the end of their programmes
with the exception of D4 and D5 which will possibly have an exceptional one year prolongation. A
new Action 'Chemistry of Metals in Medicine' (D8) has been launched last year, and four others
(D9-D12) have been accepted and will start in the near future. The first seven Actions D1-D7 which
are ending, are currently under evaluation by committees involving external referees, even from non
European countries. This evaluation procedure is very important and its seriousness will contribute to
further increase the credibility of the COST Chemistry Technical Committee and Management
Committees.
In the last report, we announced the launching of the Alliance AllChemE involving the organisations
representing the European Scientific Community. The report produced by AllChemE : Chemistry,
Europe and the future, and sent all around Europe to the governments and institutions in charge of
scientific policies is considered as a very important document. It has been edited in English, German,
French and Italian and we hope that it will contribute to promote Chemistry and Chemical
Engineering in Europe.
In December 1996, the mandate of the first Chair and Vice Chairpersons arrived to its end. The
Technical Committee decided to create an Executive Board consisting of Past-Chairman, the
Chairman and the Vice-Chairman who will work together with the Scientific Secretariat.
COST Chemistry Actions have played a major role in the building up of the scientific co-operation
in Europe. By promoting Chemistry, we have contributed to the progress of the European Science
and to the reinforcement of the European concept. We have to pursue efforts for the benefit of
Chemistry, of Science, of then economic activity and the quality of life of European
citizens.
