The ECSC Workshop "Developments in Alternative Ironmaking Processes" held in
Maizières-les-Metz on 20 and 21 December 1993 has been the fourth of a series of ECSC-
supported workshops devoted to scientific and technical discussion focused on the solution
of technological problems of major interest to the European steelmaking industry.
One of the current major challenges for the iron and steel industry is the development of new
process routes for economical production of iron with much lower direct and indirect
environmental impact.
The workshop was divided into two sessions, the first being dedicated to examining in depth
the problems and tasks involved in the "Developments of Alternative Ironmaking", and the
second to "High Blast Furnace Coal Injection". The challenge in both fields is very great and
explains the number of research projects undertaken, several of which have been or are being
funded through the ECSC Research Programme "Steel".
Much work is being done and much more has to be done, as illustrated in these proceedings;
further research effort and adequate critical mass will be needed in the future to ensure the
scientific and technical goals vital in defining future industrial innovations.
