Printed in Belgium Foreword
In February 1986 the Economic and Social Committee published a brochure
entitled 'Europe and the New Technologies'. This consisted of three
information reports:
New Technologies and R + D
New Industry
New - Social Aspects.
These three reports were supplemented by an appendix on Technological
Research, Cooperation and Innovation in Europe, which attempted to
summarize the various research and technological development programmes
of the European Community and similar programmes arising from
multilateral agreements between European states or European companies.
In view of the interest which this publication received, and in view of the
rapid growth of new research programmes, it was decided to re-issue the
appendix as a separate volume, while at the same time updating it to ensure
that it contained the most recent information, i.e. up to 31 December 1987.
Part 1 of this new text consists of a programme by programme review of
current and proposed Community actions in the areas of new technologies
in Europe. Part 2 is structured in the same way as Part 1, and consists of
a programme by programme review of major European multilateral scientific
and technological cooperation projects. The final part, Part 3, consists of
a glossary of abbreviations.
The ESC's General Secretariat is particularly grateful to those Directorates
General of the Commission (DG V - Employment, Social Affairs and
Education, DG XII - Science, Research and Development; DG XIII -
Information Market and Innovation; DG XVII - Energy), the library of the
European Parliament, and the other organizations which kindly provided
material and suggestions used in this text.
