This book contains summaries of 223 research projects financed by the
European Commission under the Measurements and testing programme
(1992-94) and the Standards, measurements and testing programme (1994-
98) up until the end of August 1996. The different projects are divided into
chapters corresponding to the various areas and themes of the two pro­
grammes. Each summary gives the objectives of the project, details of the
consortium carrying out the work and, where possible, information about
the results.
The purpose of the projects In both programmes was to improve, or de­
velop, methods of measurements and testing In order to improve the com­
petitiveness of European industry and to support the development and the
Implementation of Community policies. The projects cover the whole spec­
trum of physical, chemical and biological measurements and testing in a
wide range of different areas related to the needs of industry, food and
agriculture, environmental monitoring, health and safety in the work place,
health care, customs, the justice system and the protection of cultural heri­
tage. Many of the projects will contribute to the development or the Im­
provement of European standards. Others will lead to the development of
certified reference materials.
