The jointly organised EC-IAEA Specialist meeting on "NDT Methods for
Monitoring Degradation" was held on 10-12 March 1999 at the Institute of
Advanced Materials at the European Commission Joint Research Centre at
Petten in The Netherlands.
90 participants, from 25 countries, attended the meeting and are listed in
Appendix 1.
After introductory speeches the presentation of papers and the discussion
periods were arranged into four sessions:
Session Title Chairpersons
1. Development of NDT Techniques J.F. Coste, R. Sliteris
2. Monitoring Change in N. Maeda, M. Hutchings
Microstructure and Mechanical
Properties
3. Monitoring Irradiation and G. Karzov, P. Kauppinen
Thermal Embrittlement
4.g Corrosion and Fatigue D. Jackson, J. Bros
Defects
Session Chairpersons summarised papers and discussions in their sessions and
emphasised any major conclusions and recommendations.
It was decided at the last Regular Meeting (1997) of The International Working
Group on Life Management of Nuclear Power Plant that it was now an opportune
time to hold a Specialist Meeting on the subject.
It was intended that the meeting should provide a Forum for the promulgation
and discussion of recent developments in the field, capability evaluation,
validation tests and utility experience with NDE methods used to detect and
monitor degradation.
Specifically, techniques for large crack detection were not included in the scope
of the meeting.
Materials and components in nuclear power plants age from a variety of causes,
e.g. temperature, loading and environmental factors such as radiation, high
humidity or the presence of chemically active liquids or gases which can effect
the start of life properties and are responsible for the degradation of the
materials/components.
In many cases the assessment of the degree of degradation involves destructive
testing using different tests and samples. Appropriate non-destructive
examination of the materials or component condition would allow testing to be
performed directly on the material/component being evaluated.
Efficient NDE techniques could provide significant early warning of deterioration
and enable operators to optimise maintenance practices, which could result in
reduced costs and improved asset utilisation.
