Introduction
InstantActivity Kits Classroom Suiteincludes 30 instant-activity kits. Each kit includes an Activity ready for students to use, a Template ready for teachers to create additional similar activities quickly, and a PDF file of this tutorial.
Parts of a Set The Parts of a Set instant-activity kit includes the Parts of a Set activity, the Parts of a Set Template, and a PDF file of this tutorial. You can find these components by opening the Math Templates folder and then the FractionsÐParts of a Set folder in the New area of Classroom Suite.
The Parts of a Set Template can be used to create new fraction problem sets. Students analyze the set of pictures on each page in response to the problem on that page. They enter fraction bars to respond to the problem. Five sets of animal pictures have been provided for this template.
In this tutorial, you will start by exploring the Parts of a Set activity. Later in the tutorial, you will learn to create customized problem sets, using the Parts of a Set Template.
Universal Design The activities you create using the Parts of a Set Template andClassroom Suiteare designed for all students, including those with physical or cognitive disabilities.
Create a Folder for Your New Activities When you use this template, you will be creating new activities for your students to use. To organize these activities, you will want to create your own folder in the Activities area of Classroom Suite. 1. At the Navigation Page, click the Activities button. Click the New Folder button on the right side of the screen. A dialog box will ask you to name the folder. Give it the name of one of your classes (e.g., Mrs SmithÕs Class).
2. Open the Parts of a Set Template (see page 3). 3. When you complete your work with the template and click the Finish Activity button, the Save As Activity dialog appears. Name your new activity, select the folder in which you want to place your work, and click OK. Your new activity will now be available for you to assign to students.

Part 1: Exploring the Parts of a Set Activity
Opening Parts of a Set 1. Sign in toClassroom Suiteas a Teacher (see Getting Started in the Classroom Suite binder). The Navigation Screen displays.
2. Click the New button. 3. Open the Math Templates folder. 4. Open FractionsÐParts of a Set. Open Parts of a Set.
Exploring Parts of a Set The opening page of Parts of a Set includes a set of animals, a question, and a box into which students will place a fraction bar. Notice the toolbar at the top of the page. This toolbar contains tools to help students navigate through the pages of the activity, save their work, and hear the problems read aloud on each page. The toolbar at the bottom is used to place fraction bars on the page and manipulate them. 1. Click the green Directions button. Notice that the problem is read aloud. The text box is locked, and students will not be able to change this text. 2. Look at the set of animals on the right half of the page. Count the number of animals to determine the size of the set. 3. Click the Make Fraction button at the bottom of the page. 4. Use the Increase Denominator button to show the number of animals in the set (5). The fraction bar reads the fraction aloud as you make changes. 5. Click the Increase Numerator button to represent how many of the animals in the set live on a farm (3). 6. Click the Check Work button. Notice that student responses are being recorded. The Check Work feature provides feedback to students as they work. 7. Use the Next Page button to scroll through the remaining pages in this activity and to see the variety of sets of animals. 8. Close the activity without saving it. In the next sections of the tutorial, you will learn to use the Parts of a Set Template to create similar activities, using graphics provided with the template, available in the Picture Librar y, or from your own graphics.

Part 2: Using the Parts of a Set Template
This template can be used to create fractions problem sets. Students analyze the pictures on each page in response to questions about the parts of that set. They place fraction bars on the page to respond to the questions. Check Work enables students to get feedback on their understanding of the math concepts. Five sets of pictures have been provided, or you can import your own
Opening the Parts of a Set Template 1. From the Navigation Screen, click the New button. 2. Open the Math Templates folder. 3. Open FractionsÐParts of a Set and choose Parts of a Set Template.
Duplicating Pages 1. The Parts of a Set Template opens with two toolbars at the top of the page. The top toolbar is the Authoring toolbar, designed to help you use the template. The second is the student toolbar. The fractions toolbar is at the bottom of the page. 2. Click the yellow Authoring Instructions button to display on-screen instructions. You can refer to these instructions at any time while you work on your activity, by clicking the yellow Authoring Instructions button. 3. Click the blue Home button to go to page 1 of the activity. 4. Decide how many pages you want in your activity. Ten is a good starting number.
5. Click the Duplicate Page button 9 times. 6. Click the Home button to return to page 1. Now you are ready to begin creating the problems and sets of animals on each page.

Part 2: Using the Parts of a Set Template
Creating an Animal Set 1. Select a categor y from the toolbar at the bottom of the page. Categories include Land Animals, Ocean Animals, Insects, Birds, and Dinosaurs. 2. Pictures of animals in your chosen categor y will appear at the bottom of the page. To change categories, click the pink Categories button at the upper right of the page. 3. Click animals from your chosen categor y and place them in the Counting Box at the right of the page.
You can mix animals from different categories in Notethe same Counting Box. Use the pink Categories button to access different sets of animals.
Creating a Question Now you will create a question related to the set of animals you have created. Refer to the Parts of a Set activity for ideas.
1. Type the problem into the yellow text box. 2. When you have finished entering the problem hold down the Control key on the computer and simultaneously click the text box ([Ctrl]+click) 3. The Properties of Text Box dialog displays. Click Read-Only Text. Click OK. This will make the problem read aloud when students click the text box and prevent them from changing the text.
Entering the Answer 1.[Ctrl]+clickthe Sorting Bin where the fraction will be placed. The Properties of Math Tool dialog displays. 2. Select the Answers tab. Change ONLY the fraction portion of the answer [One1/2fraction bar]. Do not change any of the text in the rest of the answer. 3. Click OK.
Locking the Manipulatives on the Page 1. Click the Select All button. 2. Click the Lock/Unlock button. You have completed the first page of your activity.

Part 3: Customizing the Parts of a Set Template
Adding Your Own Pictures You may wish to add your own pictures to create sets with other categories of objects or other animals.
Changing Pictures in a Toolbar 1. Open the Parts of a Set Template again. 2. Click one of the categories. The toolbar of pictures displays at the bottom of the page. 3.[Ctrl+click]the first button at the left of the toolbar. The Button Properties dialog displays. You can add a picture from the Picture Librar y or from a collection of graphics you already have.
Add a Picture from the Picture Librar y a. Click the Insert From Picture Librar y button. b. From the Categor y drop down list, select a categor y. Locate the picture you want.
c. Click Insert. d. Rename the button with the picture name. Add a Picture from Another Source a. Click the Insert Picture from File button. b. Navigate to a picture you wish to use that you may have stored elsewhere on your computer, or on another CD. c. Click OK. d. Rename the button with the name of the picture.
4. When you locate the picture you want, select it and click OK. It will insert in the toolbar. Follow the same process for changing the name of the button.
Changing the Name of the Picture Category 1. Click the Categories button. 2. The toolbar of categories displays at the bottom. 3.[Ctrl+click]the button with the name of the categor y for which you changed the pictures. The Button Properties dialog displays. Change the button name. Click OK. 4. Save As Activity with a new name. Now use your new pictures to create custom problem sets.
