Printed in The Netherlands PREFACE
About one year after the EC contractors' meeting held in Cadarache,
the Commission of the European Communities organized a new one in
Brussels on 6-8 December 1982. The present volume 2 of the series D
presents a comprehensive report of this meeting. It includes presenta
tions of all the Commission's contractors in the field of photochemistry,
photoelectrochemistry and photobiology, a project which is part of the
Commission's Solar Energy R+D Programme. The report also includes
reviews of the various sectors which have been worked out in sepaiate
meetings.
The book provides an excellent overview of the present status of
research in this field as most of the best European groups being active
in this area are contractors of the Commission and participate in this
programme.
The meeting was organized towards the end of the 2nd 4-year programme
and gives a good summary of the achievements obtained within this
programme which has been going on since 1976.
The production of hydrogen and other chemical fuels by photochemical
and by photobiological processes is a long-term goal and a lot more work
and discoveries will be necessary in order to achieve it. The fact that
in recent years tremendous progress has been made in Europe and in
other parts of the world to develop the science and knowledge in this
field has increased the confidence that eventually the processes which are
being investigated will become of practical importance.
The 3rd 4-year programme to be sponsored in the frame of the European
Community is expected to start by the middle of 1983 and a new report
of this kind should become available in the period 1984-85.
