This Second European Workshop on Remote Sensing in Mineral. Exploration
organized by the Commission of the European Communities provided a good
opportunity to discuss with representatives of the EC mining industry, the
possibilities offered by remote sensing techniques in exploration, and to
establish the present state of the art of these techniques in the European
Community. It also provided a forum for a fruitful exchange of information
and discussion.
This volume contains the various communications presented. One section
covers the experiments realised at a national level, whilst the other
contains the results obtained in the framework of the EC programme where
the Commission has been playing a pioneer role in this RSD sector since
1979. In both cases, some significant results have been obtained
delineating possible new mineralised targets, and even new
mineralisations.
A large number of papers presented in this volume concern the applications
of the TM of the second generation of satellites. TM has not only a much
better resolution (30 m) than Landsat MSS (80 m) but also a larger
spectral band, with 7 channels against 4 for MSS. Other experiments also
concern airborne sensors as such as ATM, AIS and Laser where interesting
results have been obtained."
This Workshop shows that remote sensing data after image processing may be
applied either for strategical or tactical prospecting. Examples are given
in this volume. It is therefore possible to delineate new targets on a
territorial or regional scale and the methodology, which is in constant
evolution can be used even for identifying the extension of known
deposits.
The methodology in development is also evolving for exploration towards
the integration of several data sets (remote sensing, geophysical,
geochemical and other available data) for refining the search for new
targets. The main trend, especially in the framework of the EC projects,
is towards a close collaboration with mining companies or exploration
organisms in order to secure a follow-up of the newly discovered targets
by geochemical or geophysical methods or directly by drillings to prove
the validity of the methodology developed which can be further improved
(as it is the case of the Almadén, Irish and Rhodope projects). The main
scope of the EC exploration programme is to provide the EC mining
industry, with new tools for exploration both within the EC and abroad.
