Printed in Great Britain by Galliard (Printers) Ltd, Great Yarmouth PREFACE
The "Workshop on Strain Measurement at High Temperatures"
was organised by the Commission of the European Communities,
Joint Research Centre, Petten Establishment with the declared in
tention of stimulating an exchange of views concerning existing and
novel techniques for high temperature strain measurement for both
laboratory and industrial applications.
A total of 20 papers were presented which were structured into
four technical sessions: Extensometry based methods; Strain gauges;
Optical/ Radiographical methods; and Novel. The work
shop also comprised the opening address, a keynote introductory lec
ture, session discussions and the general concluding discussion. The
papers are reproduced here in camera ready form after editing, the
keynote lecture in the form of an abstract and the summaries of the
sessions and concluding discussion displayed in tabular matrix form
based on those provided by the session chairmen. It is hoped that the
reader will agree that these proceedings in their entirety do indeed
contribute towards achieving the final objective of the workshop as
laid out in the original invitation to the delegates which read "to
identify and set into motion effective means of cooperation aimed at
improving the measurement of strain at elevated temperatures".
As initiator of the workshop, I would like to thank the programme
committee not only for helping me in getting the idea off the ground
but also for kindly agreeing to join me in the editorial task. Thanks
are also due to the keynote speaker and session chairmen who all
played decisive roles in stimulating a rewarding discussion which,
after all, is perhaps the most essential ingredient of any workshop.
The contribution of the authors both in presenting their work and in
preparing their manuscripts is greatly appreciated as is the contribu
tion of all delegates during discussion sessions. Whatever the prog
ramme committee organised, without sufficient authors and dele
gates there would obviously have been no workshop. More impor
tantly for a truly successful workshop, numbers alone are insuffi
cient, as motivated and enthousiastic participants are essential and it
is hoped that the fact that such participants were indeed present is re
flected in these proceedings.
Finally I would like to thank my colleagues from the Information
Centre at J.R.C. Petten who contributed behind the scenes to the ef
ficient organisation of the meeting and the compilation of this vol
ume.
R.C. HURST.
