This publication contains the proceedings of an European workshop held in
Düsseldorf, FRG, 17-19 October 1986.
After 35 years of modern vigilance research the field of "vigilance" has
became more and more differentiated. The diversity of research areas repre
sented by the contributors to this meeting, reflects this multivariate and
multifactorial problem.
Apart from other bioscientists mainly physicians and psychologists partici
pated, among them applied scientists, basic researchers and clinicians. Some
of them were well established and authorized in their special field for many
years, others were junior scientists who wanted to have their independent
ideas discussed and made known.
The increasing differentiation of the research area "vigilance" required a
heterogenous structure of the workshop. Participants from eight European
countries attended the meeting: Belgium, France, united Kingdom, Ireland,
Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, West-Germany. They reported on problems of
vigilance in experimental settings, even with animals (Panneggiarli), in real
occupational situations and also in simulators. Some papers refered to
transport operations, which may be cars (Angermann, CTHanlon), ships
(Knauth) or trains (Akerstedt). Others addressed differential aspects of
monotony (Eysenck, Leonard) and pharmacological influences (Morris, CTHan-
lon) as well as the effects of biorhythmicals (Eilers, Kiesswet
ter, Wever, Zulley) and of environmental conditions on vigilance (Horne,
Muzet, Panneggiarli). In addition, the complicated regulating mechanisms of
vigilance (Coblentz & Ignazi, Craig, Delmonte, Hockey) and the further
developments of measuring methods (Galley, Gros, Schenk) were discussed.
Finally, it was our intention to put forward investigation models (Leonard,
Schenk) and theories of vigilance (Douchamp, Hockey).
