Industrial Decline and Socio-Spatial Polarisation: the Case of Bilbao.
Since the end of the seventies, the metropolitan area of Bilbao has suffered, as other old european industrial cities, a strong decline in terms of population, employment and income. This paper will analyse how the uneven effect of industrial decline and suburbanisation has reproduced and increased, during the eighties, the traditional socio-spatial pattern in Bilbao opposing the two riversides of the Nervion: the left riverside as an industrial and working class space and the right riverside as a residential and bourgeois area. While the working class space declined a new middle class residential area appeared on the right bank. Therefore, the socio-spatial polarisation of the city was deepened and the most serious symptoms of urban decline of Bilbao are concentrated on the left bank.
Depuis la fin des années soixante-dix, Bilbao a connu, comme d'autres anciens centres industriels européens, un déclin important en termes de population, emplois et revenus. Cet article analyse comment l'effet inégal du déclin industriel et de la suburbanisation ont reproduit et renforcé les structures socio-spatiales traditionnelles de Bilbao. Celles-ci opposent les deux rives de la Nervion, à savoir la rive gauche industrielle et ouvrière et la rive droite bourgeoise et résidentielle. Durant les années quatre- vingt, l'espace ouvrier a décliné et une nouvelle zone de classe moyenne s'est créée sur la rive droite. Ainsi la polarisation s'est renforcée et les plus graves symptômes de déclin urbain à Bilbao se concentrent sur la rive gauche.
