Description

Cahiers d'études africaines - Année 1973 - Volume 13 - Numéro 49 - Pages 5-8
H. BRUNSCHWIG — Decolonisation, Neo-colonialism: An Essay on the Vocabulary of Colonial Polilics. The new concepts of decolonisation and neo-colonialism have been forged in the late fifties. They are ratlier ambiguous and do not carry the same meaning for the former coloniscrs and the former colonized. Thus decolonisation can be understood either as a return to the statu quo ante or as a new situation based upon the results of the colonial domination. Similarly neo-colonialism, understood as a form of continued economic exploitation must be explained less in terms of machiavellian politics on the part of the former colonial power than by reference to an overall economic and technological situation which differs completely frorn that obtaining at the onset of colonialism.

Abstract
H. BRUNSCHWIG — Decolonisation, Neo-colonialism: An Essay on the Vocabulary of Colonial Polilics. The new concepts of
"decolonisation" and "neo-colonialism" have been forged in the late fifties. They are ratlier ambiguous and do not carry the same
meaning for the former coloniscrs and the former colonized. Thus "decolonisation" can be understood either as a return to the
statu quo ante or as a new situation based upon the results of the colonial domination. Similarly "neo-colonialism," understood as
a form of continued economic exploitation must be explained less in terms of machiavellian politics on the part of the former
colonial power than by reference to an overall economic and technological situation which differs completely frorn that obtaining
at the onset of colonialism.
