Description
The Order of Ritual and the Order of Things: Henri II's Royal Entry in Rouen. As part of the celebrations that accompanied Henri II's royal entry into Rouen, an exact reproduction of a Brazilian village (including fifty Brazilian cannibals) was created. This article explores the social and cultural contexts within which the royal entry was written and enacted. In particular, it focuses on the relationship between the entry's representation of Brazil and contemporaneous practices of collecting and display. It will argue that cabinets of curiosity, royal entry festivals and rhetorical practices were all linked to common epistemological strategies of distinction and s elf- definition related to the ascendancy of new urban elites in France.
