PREFACE The European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, within the framework of its four-year rolling programme for 1981-84, is investigating, among other matters, the question of the effects of technological development on various areas of private and working life. Four sectors were chosen to illustrate how, and to what extent, electronic technology has an impact on the life and work of people who come into contact with this technology, whether as customers or as employees at their workplace. These sectors are: 1) banking and insurance (1981) 2) supermarkets (1982) 3) public service (1983) 4) mechanical engineering (1984) The research on Supermarkets was started in 1982. Four countries were selected for study - Denmark, France, Ireland and the Netherlands.
