This article is devoted to describing the evolution of the conception of progress in Michelet's work. At the beginning of his career close to the models of the philosophy of history used by the liberal historians, Michelet, making freedom not only the goal but the motor of human progress, was led, in the second half of the century, towards an idea of evolution inspired by the category of the essay. The development of his work, in its rhythm and its growth, shows the change in his vision of progress. After 1850 the idea that regression constitutes a paradoxical, but essential, modality of progress becomes determinant. Every advance supposes a reflexive move which furthermore justifies the role of the historian in History.
