Description
There exist among the Manding peoples of Mali and their neighbours, ancient systems of symbols and ideograms. Besides, two syllabical phonetic writings were recently invented in the Manding world : the writing of the Vai conceived around 1833 and the Masaba writing of the Bambara-Masasi conceived in 1930. It seems that there exists a link between the Manding ideographic tradition and the Vai and Masaba syllabaries. By its general aspect, if not in the detail, the Masaba has some similarities to the Vai writing. Other points of similarities can also be established with some Bambara ideograms analysed by Germaine Dieterlen and with some letters of the Arabic secret alphabets of the Hodh (Mauritania). However, the question remains whether there existed a Manding writing tradition, previous to the Vai syllabary and the Masaba, which was not purely ideographic but also phonetic.
