Oktober 1976 in TubingenPotsdam, im Januar 2007AbstractIn this thesis the interplay between hydrodynamic transport and speci c ad-hesion is theoretically investigated. An important biological motivation forthis work is the rolling adhesion of white blood cells experimentally investi-gated in o w chambers. There, speci c adhesion is mediated by weak bondsbetween complementary molecular building blocks which are either located onthe cell surface (receptors) or attached to the bottom plate of the o w chamber(ligands).The model system under consideration is a hard sphere covered with recep-tors moving above a planar ligand-bearing wall. The motion of the sphere isin uenced by a simple shear o w, deterministic forces, and Brownian motion.An algorithm is given that allows to numerically simulate this motion as wellas the formation and rupture of bonds between receptors and ligands. Thepresented algorithm spatially resolves receptors and ligands.
