Libbey. 11 CHAPTER I. BIRTH AND CHILDHOOD, The Sheldons were of English Puritan descent. Three brothers came to America between two hundred and three hundred years ago. Wm. Sheldon's grand- father, Thaddeus Sheldon, was captain ina the Revolu- tionary war, and infought the battle of Plattsburg, where Captain William Miller, of Advent fame, also was. William Sheldon was the third of the seven children born to Hiram and Villars Sheldon, only three of whom lived to maturity.
