The manuscript is in modern Greek. 1 offer this as a very free translation. In preparing it for the English reader, I have introduced many expressions which an English reader only can comprehend ; and I have not hesitated, in nu- merous instances, to substitute terms and titles peculiar to ourselves and our country, whenever I thought that they would render the narrative Vlll ADVERTISEMENT. and simple, and were justifiedmore clear by expressions in the original.
