Cultivating Economic Self-Sufficiency in the North Quabbin Adult Literacy Tutor and Community Outreach Assistant The Assistant will help teen and young adult GED/ABE learners at The Literacy Project – North Quabbin develop greater economic self-sufficiency by connecting them to supportive adult tutors and people, places, opportunities and resources both in and beyond the 9-town rural North Quabbin region. Adult Literacy Tutor and Community Outreach Assistant

The Assistant is responsible for providing tutoring services to adult literacy and
GED students at The Literacy Project's Orange, MA site and conducting outreach to recruit
additional volunteer tutors. The position will also perform duties in community
collaboration and administrative support for the Orange classroom. The Tutor and
Community Outreach Assistant will report directly the Site Supervisor of The Literacy
Project at North Quabbin and will work in close collaboration with the Volunteer
Coordinator of The Literacy Project.

Qualifications
Qualifications include maturity, commitment, creativity, knowledge of local community
and a passion for serving people in need. A GED or HS graduate highly desirable.
Education and/or experience in adult basic education, experience with community
organizing, and an interest in literacy are also desirable. In accordance with TLP policy, a
background screening, which includes a CORI check, is required for this position.

The mission of the Commonwealth Corps is to engage Massachusetts residents of all
ages and backgrounds in direct service to rebuild communities, address unmet
community needs, and increase volunteerism. More than 250 Commonwealth Corps
members will serve up to twelve months in full-time or part-time capacities at 36
designated nonprofits and public entities. What they have in common is a desire to put
their talents and ideas to use in the service of their communities and the Commonwealth.

The Literacy Project is a non-profit, community-based adult basic education program
located in Western Massachusetts with learning centers in Greenfield, Orange,
Northampton, Amherst, and Ware. We offer free classes in basic reading, writing, math,
GED preparation, computer literacy, creative writing, science, and social studies. We also
offer a Distance Learning Program for students who want to prepare for the GED at
home. We have a Transitions program to assist GED graduates with the next steps in their
education. There are also many ways that members of the community work with us as
volunteers. Literacy and Adult Basic education are building blocks for democratic
community development - this is one of the guiding principles of The Literacy Project's

Activities
The Corps member will further develop and coordinate a volunteer program at The
Literacy Project - North Quabbin site and recruit and train volunteers in the region to
tutor and assist older teens and adults as they prepare for their GED exams. The member
will cultivate and train 1-2 volunteers as volunteer coordinators to enable the volunteer
program to continue once the Corps member departs. The member will also conduct
outreach to identify and match people, resources and opportunities to learners at the
site.

Results and Measurement
A team of volunteer tutors will have the support, training and confidence to successfully
tutor GED learners. Their tutoring will decrease GED preparation time and increase GED
completion rates enabling learners to better transition to work or higher education.
Increased support from community members, resources and opportunities will support
these youth in finding and keeping a job, managing their money, starting a business and
pursuing further education and training opportunities.
12 learners who have been tutored complete their GED and transition to higher education
by the end of the Corps member term and 2 tutors have become volunteer program
coordinators.
Instrument
Tutor/mentor recruitment and retention records; GED results; post-GED follow-up with
learners to determine employment and education status.
Beneficiaries
Each of 12 tutors will tutor 3 students resulting in 36 learners being served.
