The marble head inv. no. 882 in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki came from the north terrace of the forum ofthe ancient city, where in 1924 and 1973 a sumptuous building of Imperial times was excavated, believed to have been a library (building B). It yielded a large number of important sculptures, including the famous statue of Athena Julia Domna, as well as others which were cultic. The technical characteristics indicate that head 882 must have belonged to a colossal acrolithic statue of the tebennophoros/toga wearing type. The person depicted is identified with the emperor Titus, since the typological characteristics of the head, particularly the curly locks of the hair, point to well known portraits of this emperor. This Greek work presents certain peculiarities in the rendering of the cheeks and eyes that suggest to us a comparison with the head of the statue of Titus from Olympia, which is attributed to an Attic workshop. The interpretation of building Β as a library may be doubted in view of a series of observations about its architectural type. Furthermore its connection with a triple apse building that was excavated in contact with it and belonged to the same building programme suggests that we have to do with buildings of a cultic character arranged in order on a separate terrace, as was the case in the forum at Philippi. It is probable that at least some of the sculptures excavated with the head of Titus had been erected in these buildings. The colossal acrolithic statue of the emperor from which the head came may plausibly have been erected in a temple dedicated to the cuit of the Flavian emperors, which was perhaps founded on the occasion of the deification of Vespasian by his son Titus (79 AD).
Η μαρμάρινη κεφαλή αρ. ευρ. 882 στο Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Θεσσαλονίκης προέρχεται από το βόρειο άνδηρο της αρχαίας Αγοράς της πόλης, όπου το 1924 και το 1973 ανασκάφηκε ένα πολυτελές κτίριο της αυτοκρατορικής εποχής που ερμηνεύτηκε ως βιβλιοθήκη (κτίριο Β). Από εδώ προήλθαν ένας αριθμός από πολύ σημαντικά γλυπτά, ανάμεσα στα οποία και το γνωστό άγαλμα της Αθηνάς-Ιουλίας Δόμνας αλλά και ορισμένα άλλα που φαίνεται ότι ήταν λατρευτικά. Η κεφαλή 882 πρέπει να ανήκε σε ένα κολοσσιαίο ακρόλιθο άγαλμα στον τύπο του τηβεννοφορου, όπως δείχνουν τα τεχνικά χαρακτηριστικά. Ο εικονιζόμενος ταυτίζεται με τον αυτοκράτορα Τίτο, αφού τα τυπολογικά χαρακτηριστικά της κεφαλής και κυρίως οι σωζόμενοι βόστρυχοι της κόμης παραπέμπουν σε γνωστά πορτρέτα του αυτοκράτορα αυτού. Ορισμένες ιδιαιτερότητες που παρουσιάζει το ελληνικό αυτό έργο στην απόδοση των παρειών και των ματιών μας οδηγούν στη σύγκριση του με την κεφαλή του αγάλματος του Τίτου από την Ολυμπία που αποδίδεται σε αττικό εργαστήριο. Η ερμηνεία του κτιρίου Β ως βιβλιοθήκης μπορεί να αμφισβητηθεί με βάση μια σειρά από παρατηρήσεις στην αρχιτεκτονική μορφή του. Εξάλλου η σχέση του με ένα τρίκογχο κτίσμα που ανασκάφηκε σε επαφή με αυτό και ανήκει στο ίδιο οικοδομικό πρόγραμμα μας οδηγεί στην πρόταση ότι έχουμε να κάνουμε με λατρευτικού χαρακτήρα κτίσματα τοποθετημένα σε παράταξη πάνω σε ένα ξεχωριστό άνδηρο, όπως συμβαίνει και στο forum των Φιλίππων. Στα κτίσματα αυτά είναι πιθανό ότι είχαν στηθεί ορισμένα τουλάχιστον από τα γλυπτά που ανασκάφηκαν μαζί με την κεφαλή του Τίτου. Το κολοσσιαίο ακρόλιθο άγαλμα του αυτοκράτορα από το οποίο προήλθε η κεφαλή είναι εύλογο να είχε στηθεί σε ένα ναό της λατρείας των Φλαβίων αυτοκρατόρων που ίσως ιδρύθηκε με την ευκαιρία της θεοποίησης του Βεσπασιανού από το γιο του Τίτο (79 μ.Χ.).
La tête en marbre n° 882 du Musée de Thessalonique provient de la terrasse Nord du forum de la ville antique où l'on a fouillé, en 1924 et 1973, un somptueux édifice d'époque impériale interprété comme une bibliothèque (édifice B). Il a livré des sculptures remarquables dont la fameuse statue d'Athéna-Julia Domna, mais aussi, semble-t-il, des statues de culte. La tête n° 882 devait appartenir à une statue acrolithe colossale au type du personnage en toge, comme le prouvent ses caractéristiques techniques. Le personnage représenté est identifié avec l'empereur Titus, puisque les traits typologiques de la tête et surtout les boucles de la chevelure renvoient à des portraits connus de cet empereur. Certaines particularités de cette œuvre grecque, dans le rendu des joues et des yeux, nous amènent à la comparer avec la tête de la statue de Titus d'Olympie qui est attribuée à un atelier attique. L'interprétation de l'édifice Β comme bibliothèque peut être mise en doute à partir d'une série d'observations sur l'architecture. En outre, ses liens avec un bâtiment triconque fouillé juste à côté et qui relève du même programme architectural nous amènent à supposer que nous avons affaire à des constructions à caractère cultuel alignées sur une terrasse à part, comme c'est le cas au forum de Philippes. C'est probablement dans ces édifices qu'avaient été dressées quelques-unes au moins des sculptures découvertes avec la tête de Titus. Il est permis de penser que la statue acrolithe colossale de l'empereur dont nous avons la tête avait été dressée dans un temple consacré au culte des Fla- viens, peut-être fondé lorsque Vespasien fut divinisé par son fils Titus (79 ap. J.-C).
