This volume contains the results of research commissioned by the European
Foundation in Dublin concerning case studies of innovations in shiftwork in
the chemical industry in Belgium.
The researchers were asked to investigate innovatory experiments in shiftwork
relating to the following aspects:
- reduction of personnel on night work
- new forms of rotation systems, possibly including extra
crews and new types of absence coverage
- systematic arrangements for transfer of older or long-term
shift workers to day-work
and the consequent impact on working conditions.
Based on these guidelines, case studies were carried out in their countries by
H.I.V.A (Belgium), A.N.A.C.T. (France), I.S.V.E.T. (Italy), and Loughborough
University of Technology (United Kingdom).
These studies were evaluated by representatives of governments, employers and
trade unions. Each of the three representative groups weighed the finding
of the analyses contained in the reports against the respective experience of
its members and, if appropriate, put forward proposals aimed at improving
the situation. The opinion of each group has been set down in a document
entitled "evaluation report".
This volume consists of the following:
1. a synthesis note written by the Foundation as a working document for
the evaluation seminar;
2. the evaluation reports drawn up by representatives of governments,
employers and trade unions, based on working group meetings held
during the seminar which took place in Dublin on 22, 23 and 24
October 1980; 3. the studies carried out by the experts in H.I.V.A.
