This study does not necessarily reflect the views of the Commission of the
European Communities in this area and in no way anticipates the Commission's
future attitude towards this matter. INTRODUCTION
There are many reasons why the EEC promoted research into "Economic and
other questions involved in the production of oriental tobacco in the EEC".
There seem to be four main reasons though.
The first is that for several years there has been an imbalance between
supply and demand for OT on the world market.
The second particularly concerns Greece's joining the EEC. There are,
understandably, a number of problems involved in incorporating Greek OT
Production in the Community.
Thirdly, there is the recent trend towards restoring the balance to the
EEC's Mediterranean agricultural policy. It seems indisputable that
products typical of the Mediterranean, and therefore of Southern Italy,
should be given better and more adequate protection. OT is basically one
of the most important of these products.
Lastly, there is the connection with the vital research into agriculture
and genetic improvement, which had already been requested, and which has,
incidentally, been set up recently in projects financed by the EEC.
In this context research has been carried out in order to give a fairly
simple picture of the complex question of OT in Italy, the EEC and the
world. Therefore there has been research at both national - particularly
Greece and Italy - and international levels. With regard to the state of production in this particular sector of
tobacco-growing in Italy, the technical, economical, social and organizational
aspects were studied, with - among other things - emphasis on the
importance of OT in its main areas of diffusion.
The research was carried out by a research group comprising:
1. Prof. Vincenzo FAENZA, Head of Research
2. Dott. Mario BALESTRA
3.. Agostino BOTTI
4. Dott. Demostene COSTAGLIOLA
5.. Gian Luigi CUROTTI
6. Arch. Dott. Francesco MONTANI
7. Per. Agr. Luciano PARTEL
8. Dott. ssa Marina PUCCIONI
9. Per. Agr. Antonio ROSANIA
10. Dott. Francesco SANT0DIR0CC0
The report was prepared by Prof. Vincenzo FAENZA with the assistance of the
experts mentioned in each chapter. CONTENTS
