Three Ways to Fold Flatbed Truck Tarps It might be interesting to survey flatbed truck drivers to find out which they dislike more: applying tarps or folding them at the end of a run. Both tasks can be very troublesome because of weather, a shortage of time, etc. Having said that, how a driver folds his or her tarps affects everything from how long they last two how easy they are to apply at the start of a new run. Those able to master the folding process find it much easier to unfold and apply tarps for new loads.

There are many different ways to fold; we have listed three common methods below. As you read the descriptions, keep in mind that folding is always easier when you have some help. Do not be afraid to ask another driver or someone in the shipping yard.

1. The Center Fold

The center fold method is one that works with tarps of any size. It is especially useful for large steel tarps because it enables you to get a tight fold without a lot of trapped air. It takes its name from the fact that everything is brought to the center. Start this fold by stretching your tarp out flat. The first fold will be lengthwise.

You and your folding partner should each take a corner and pull it down to within about two inches of the center. This 2-inch gap is important; it will enable air to escape as you fold. Now grab the corners on the other hand and bring them in to within 2 inches as well. Now repeat the process a second time. You should end up with six total folds stacked on top of the center panel. Finally, choose one of the ends and pull it all the way across until it meets the other.

2. The Tri-Fold

The tri-fold method is nothing more than an adaptation of folding a business letter. Beginning with your first fold lengthwise, grab the two corners and fold over, pulling them two-thirds of the way up the length of the tarp. Now grab the other two corners and pull down until they meet the lower edge of the first fold. You should have what looks like a giant business letter folded in thirds. Now repeat the process by folding from edge to edge.

This method works well on either small or large tarps. However, it is easy to get air trapped inside if you do not smooth out the tarp with every fold. You might also find that this fold does not work well with lumber tarps with attached flaps. In such a case, the center fold will work better by folding the flaps in before you begin the main portion of fold.

3. The Triangle Fold

Smaller tarps can be folded in a triangle shape, just like the American flag. This is a fold that will definitely require some help to pull off. Because this one is so hard to explain, we will not try to do so here. Instead, we recommend you look online for an illustrated guide to folding a flag. It is pretty easy to understand once you see it illustrated.

We have listed only three options for folding your flatbed truck tarps. You may have a better way that works for you. That’s great. Atthe end of the day, folding tarps is about reducing their footprint as much as possible while keeping everything neat and organized at the same time. Whatever works for you is your best option.
