The purpose of the symposium, organized by the Commission of the
European Communities in collaboration with the International Union
for Health Education, was to provide an opportunity for joint discussion
by the representatives of health education organizations, public health
and education authorities, teachers and representatives of the various
other disciplines concerned with health promotion. The main aim of the
discussion was to determine the role which the teacher should play in
the promotion of health by education and training. The discussion
centred on the following questions :
a) how to define and characterize the role of the teacher in health
education;
b) how to provide the teacher with adequate skills, information and
materials for carrying out such a tasks;
c) how to help the teacher to deal with growing challenges such as
drug abuse, smoking, alcoholism, etc., by the continuing evolution
of health education programmes in schools based on evaluations of
the effectiveness of programme content and teaching methods.
The proceedings of the symposium provide useful answers to these
questions. The Commission hopes that this report will have a wide
readership, in particular among teachers and the competent authorities
in the Member States.
