Nowadays, one of the top priorities of the Ministry of Culture and Communication is to strengthen the impact and readability of assignments conducted in the architectural arena. In this, the Ministry is also keen to assert the place that architecture must occupy within the Government’s cultural policies. The projects and reforms undertaken to encourage the training of architects, both initial and on-going, architectural instruction, and the actual exercise of the architect’s profession all attest to this. As do the beefed up support given to the dissemination of French know- how in architecture, and the attention paid to the quality of public contracting. ArchiLab is an outstanding and to date unparalleled national event, inaugurat- ed in 1999 at the bidding of the City of Orleans; it has been supported since then by the Minist ry of Culture and Communication. By way of ArchiLab, the said Ministry is eager to underwrite a line of thinking about all contemporary architectural practices as well as new challenges associated with urban development, thus meeting the expectations loudly expressed by all citizens with regard to the architectural and urban environment. Organizations whose brief involves spreading the word – one such being the FRAC Centre [Regional Contemporary Art Collection], backed up by the cultural departments of the City of Orleans – are making an impor- tant contribution to the spread of archi- tecture in France, and its sphere of influence abroad.The internationally acclaimed ArchiLab conference is a shining example of this.
