A BOUT THE A UTHOR
K evin D. Randle retired from the military in 2009 as a lieutenant colonel. He flew combat missions in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot and recently received the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Iraq. In 1974 he got his first credit as a freelance writer with an article about UFO landing traces. He has investigated such cases all over the United States, including the famous Roswell crash of 1947. Randle has written more than two dozen books on the topic, is a frequent guest on radio and television, and is one of the participants in Discovery Canada s newest UFO program. He continues to research the topic but at a most leisurely pace than before. He lives with his wife in Iowa.

A CKNOWLEDGMENTS
T he problem with acknowledgments is that someone important is almost invariably overlooked. A book is a project in which one or two people sit in rooms in front of a computer screen and attempt to put together something that is interesting and entertaining. But to pull this off it requires assistance from many others. Sometimes it is a simple email answer to a question and other times it is reviewing portions of the manuscript for accuracy. This work is no exception. Without the help of many people, great chunks of this book might not have been included. If there is an order to here, other than by chapter, it is unintentional.
Keith Chester and his work on the Foo Fighters was a wonderful resource. Clas Svahn reviewed the Ghost Rockets chapter, providing insight into that case and making sure that the Swedish names were spelled correctly. Wendy Connors and Rod Dyke told me about the early days of the unofficial investigation at Wright Field. Steven Bassett and his Paradigm Research Group provided the opportunity to meet with several of those interviewed for this book. Robert Hastings was helpful in understanding the intrusions at various military installations, and Robert Salas provided a first-hand account of his experiences at Maelstrom Air Force Base. Salas also provided an introduction to others who had witnessed similar activities at other Air Force installations. John Callahan, formerly of the FAA, gave me his personal account of his investigation into the JAL 1628 incident. Others who contributed by answering questions include Tom Carey, Jerry Clark, Michael Swords, Barry Greenwood, John Steiger, Don Ecker, Frank Warren, Mark Rodeghier, Nick Redfern, and probably a dozen others whom I have left out inadvertently.

I NTRODUCTION
M ore than 12,000 reports on unidentified flying objects (UFOs) exist in the government files known as Project Blue Book. Included among them are tens of thousands of pages of related material, reports, surveys, letters, and investigations that need to be reviewed and studied to gain a complete understanding of the Air Force program of UFO research.
There are thousands of pages of documents that relate to Project Moon Dust, an intelligence function that began in the late 1950s and continued until 1985, when the code name was compromised. At that point, rather than end the project, the code name was changed and classified, and those assigned to the various UFO projects went back to work.
The files of the U.S. Department of State, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Army, Navy and Air Force all have documents relating to UFOs, UFO investigations, and UFO activities that inhibited or affected their operations at various times. All of these documents tell a story of deceit, deception, and duplicity, leading the public away from the truth by wrapping it in ridicule, misinformation, and secrecy.
Buried deep in the National Archives in Washington, D.C., are additional documents in various files that are labeled in odd ways or located in strange places. The question is how to figure out where these documents are kept and finding a way to access them.
To end the discussions about UFOs by the public, in the late 1960s the Air Force dedicated more than half a million dollars to a civilian university to study UFOs. The government files reveal that rather than desiring a scientific investigation, the University of Colorado study, known as the Condon Committee, was actually a way to end Air Force investigation of UFOs and to stymie civilian interest in the topic. The mission was clearly stated in documents found in both Project Blue Book government files and those held by private institutions.
