As the world today faces messy problems, what in some circles has been called global weirding, the term resilience has taken centre stage. This is crunch time �as we grapple with the negative effects of both climate change and urbanisation. Some commentators have compared the huge problems we face today to Oom Schalk�s proverbial leopard waiting for us in the withaak�s shade. Do we endlessly count Oom Schalk�s proverbial leopard�s spots? This is the question posed by a stellar cast of academics, researchers, and experts whose contributions in this text is a rallying cry for action to build resilience to the challenging impact of urbanisation and climate change. To that end, this volume gives hope about the potential for human agency. Our challenge however, is to re-examine our values, to change our conservation conversation and return to a more wise and holistic understanding of ourselves and our place in the Universe. Perhaps, then only can the obituaries on our demise stay locked in the drawer.

Note on Contributors Archimedes Muzendais a senior research associate at the African Urban Institute and a Machel-Mandela Fellow at the Brenthurst Foundation. His research interests are land use planning, urban environmentalism, place-making and urban governance. He holds a BSc Honours in Rural and Urban Planning from University of Zimbabwe and an MPA from Central European University. Audrey Kwangwamacurrently engaged as a Lecturer at the is University of Zimbabwe. Prior to that, she was engaged by Renaissance Partners as a Property Specialist responsible for supporting Renaissance Partners Property Division. She joined Renaissance Partners on 1 November 2008 until its relocation from Zimbabwe in November 2012. Prior to joining Renaissance Partners, Mrs. Kwangwama worked for Old Mutual Properties where she was a Property Investment Analyst from 2006-2008. Mrs. Kwangwama began her career in 1997 at the City of Harare as a Property Valuer where she was responsible for Council’s Estate Management and valuation of properties for rating purposes. In 2000, she joined the University of Zimbabwe as a Lecturer in the Department of Rural and Urban Planning. While lecturing at the University of Zimbabwe, she was engaged as a part time Researcher in property investment and development by CB Richard Ellis in 2006. Mrs. Kwangwama is a Corporate Member of the Zimbabwe Institute of Regional and Urban Planners (ZIRUP). She is also registered as a Valuer with the Valuers’ Council of Zimbabwe and a Registered Estate Agent. Mrs. Kwangwama is currently enrolled with the University of Zimbabwe for a Doctor of Philosophy in Planning and Real Estate. Brilliant Mavhima holds a Bachelor’s degree in Rural and Urban Planning and is currently a Master student at the University of Zimbabwe studying rural and urban planning. He is currently a graduate teaching assistant at the same institution. His focus is in urban design. He spends most of his time researching on urban design as well as designing building plans for different clients.

Brilliant has 3 publication, 8 papers in press and 2 book chapters in press. Charity Manyerukeis an Associate Professor and Dean of Faculty of Social Studies, University of Zimbabwe. She holds a DPhil (International Relations and Political Science), MSc (International Relations), BSc (Political and Administrative Studies), University of Zimbabwe, IPMZ (Human Resources), LCCI Diploma (Public Relations) and Law and Management courses (UNISA). Her research interests are politics and natural resources management, international relations and the politics of gender. Christopher Mabezais an independent consultant. He holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where he was awarded an Andrew Mellon doctoral fellowship. Subsequently, Dr Mabeza was appointed a research fellow at Rhodes University where he did extensive fieldwork in the rural Eastern Cape of South Africa. He was part of a research think tank named Amanzi for Food. Dr Mabeza is a co-recipient of the Rhodes University Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Award for Community Engagement, 2017. Chris is very passionate about the impacts of climate change on rural development. To that end, he is writing a book on rural development, which grapples with “asking what matters, not what’s the matter”. Dr Mabeza is also the author of the following books:The Clash of the Titans and Other Short Stories,Water and soil in holy matrimony? A smallholder farmer’s innovative agricultural practices for adapting to climate in rural Zimbabwe, Memoirs of an Unsung Legend,Nemeso,andLiving with the Anthropocene blues: Adaptation to climate change in Zimbabwe(in press). Elmond Bandaukois a Consultant and Research Associate with the Development Governance Institute (DEGI), a Harare based consulting and development research firm. He holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) with specialization in Local government from the University of Western Ontario (Canada) where he studied as an African Leaders of Tomorrow (ALT) Scholar. He did his BSc. (Hons) in Rural and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe. His interests are urban policy and governance, urban resilience, participatory policy making, policy innovation and policy

diffusion, public management, program and policy evaluation, collaborative governance and the politics of urban development in cities of the global south. His co-edited book is,‘Peri-Urban Developments and Processes in Africa with Special Reference to Zimbabwe’, which is published by Springer International Publishing.His academic publication record also includes over 18 book chapters and 20 articles in international journals. Ignatius Gutsais currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, University of Zimbabwe. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Witwatersrand, an M.Sc. in Sociology and Social Anthropology and B.Sc. (Hons) Sociology from the University of Zimbabwe. His research interests are in ageing, climate change, livelihoods and rural development. Innocent Chirisais a full professor at the Department of Rural & Urban Planning, University of Zimbabwe. Currently is the deputy dean of the Faculty of Social Studies at the University of Zimbabwe and is a Research Fellow at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of the Free State, South Africa. He holds a DPhil in Social Studies, M.Sc. (Planning), B.Sc. Honours in Rural & Urban Planning all from the University of Zimbabwe and a post- graduate Diploma in Land Management and Informal Land Resettlement from the Institute of Housing and Urban Development Studies, Erasmus University, The Netherlands. His research interests are systems dynamics in urban land, regional stewardship and resilience in human habitats. Joseph Kamuzhanje is a Professor of Practice in Urban and Regional Planning with the University of Venda. He has over 25 years of experience in Rural and Urban Development. He holds a BSc Rural and Urban Planning (RUP) from the University of Zimbabwe, an MSc in Regional Development Planning and Management from the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. He worked for the Department of Physical Planning for 15 years, for humanitarian and development non-Governmental organisations for 10 years and is currently working as NGO and Projects Executive for Coopers Zimbabwe. Prof Kamuzhanje has a keen interest in

community based, community centred and community led sustainable and resilient development interventions. He is also interested in understanding the frame conditions for the transition of communities and institutions from relief to development. Julius Musevenzi is a senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology, University of Zimbabwe. He holds a PhD in Sociology and Development Studies from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa, MSc in Sociology and Social Anthropology, BSc Honours in Sociology from the University of Zimbabwe. His research interests are in rural livelihoods development and changing trends, resilience and survival strategies. Liaison Mukarwiholds a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Rural and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe. He is currently practicing as a Town Planner at Human Settlements Experts (Pvt) Ltd in Zimbabwe. Liaison is a freelance researcher whose researches focus on Urban Management and Governance, Environmental Design, Urban Planning Practice, Housing and Community Issues and Transport and Sustainability issues. He had published more than several journal articles and book chapters. Liaison participated in various academic researches as a research assistant. Memory Mpambelais a postgraduate student in the Department of Social Work, University of Zimbabwe. She is also a graduate teaching assistant at the same institution. Her research interests are in women empowerment, child protection and social development. Nicq C.I Paradzais a Town Planner at Pearlville Land Developers in Zimbabwe. He is a holder of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Honours Degree in Rural and Urban Planning with the University of Zimbabwe. He specialises in Construction Engineering. He has 2 years of experience in land development feasibility studies and proposals. His research interests are design of land uses and the built environment, and resilience in human environments.

Patrick Chiroroa Professor of Psychology who has taught at is universities and conducted research studies in Zimbabwe and South Africa. He is a former lecturer at the Psychology Department and Deputy Dean for the Social Science Faculty at the University Zimbabwe. He was also a senior lecturer and professor at the University Pretoria in South Africa. He was also specialist research consultant for various state and non-state organisations in South Africa. He is also the Managing Director at Impact Research International, which operates in South Africa and Zimbabwe among other countries in Southern Africa. Phineas T Dohwe is an passionate and experienced regional and urban planner with 24 years’ of solid and practical experience in the built environment, land use and development planning. He has since 1993 and continues to be involved in several land use planning projects in the Built Environment from conception to implementation and to compliance. Phineas specialises in client advice as well as fostering Local Authorities buy-in for proposed development projects especially innovative projects that introduces new ground in planning. He is a Corporate Member of the Zimbabwe Institute of Regional and Urban Planners. As a member of the Institute he has been actively involved in the business of the Institute through participation at the respective Annual Schools, through chairing sessions, making presentations and leading thematic st sessions. He has twice held the position of 1 Vice President as well as a two term President of the Zimbabwe Institute of Regional and Urban Planners for the year August 2016 to August 2017 and August 2017 to August 2018. Phineas is a part time Lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe, Department of Regional and Urban Planning since the year 2003 teaching planning courses with a specific bias in Urban Development Planning Design and Management. Currently, he is an Associate Director and a Team Leader for the Development Planning Division with Arup Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd. Phineas holds a Honour’s and a Master’s of Science Degrees in Regional and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe qualification attained in the years 1992 and 2004 respectively.

Samson Mhizhais a lecturer in Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology and Cross-Cultural Psychology at the Department of Psychology at the University of Zimbabwe. Research interests are in topics around children and youths in difficult circumstances, psychology of grief, influence of religion and culture on psychological functioning and family studies. Samson holds an MPhil and BSc Hons in Psychology from the University of Zimbabwe and is currently working on a DPhil Project on the lived experiences and resilience pathways among street children who have gone through family reunification in Zimbabwe. He has published several articles on Street Children and religious functioning. Vincent Mabvurirais a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Work, University of Zimbabwe. He is a holder of a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work from University of Limpopo, South Africa. He also holds a Master of Social Work degree and a Bachelor of Social Work Honours Degree both from the University of Zimbabwe. His research interests are in child welfare, indigenous knowledge systems, climate change and religion and spirituality.
