preface

THIS IS A BOOK COMPRISING EXCERPTS FROM THREE OF MY POLITICAL PLAYS, A COUPLE OF POEMS, TALKS I VE GIVEN, INTERVIEWS IN WHICH I WAS THE SUBJECT, AND POLITICAL COMMENTARIES I VE WRITTEN.
I have put it together with the hope that it will serve as some kind of documentation of the times we live in and the kind of politics Malaysians have had to suffer.
I also hope it will impress upon Malaysians the need to speak plainly and openly, without fear of reprisals and persecution.
My style has always been plain and direct - because I believe in calling a spade a spade. I recall my good friend Edward Dorall saying that my writing reflects that of a basher and a brawler . He probably meant it ain t pretty, but it gets to the point.
That, I admit, is true. I admit my writing tends to be confrontational - and being confrontational, some people will say, is not right for our culture. I, however, don t give a damn. Street protests are also said to be not part of our culture and yet we already had street protests against the Malayan Union more than 60 years ago.
I hope this book will demonstrate that so-called conventional wisdom is not always real wisdom. What matters most is what we ourselves believe.
I have put in these pages my beliefs. Not everyone will agree with them, but that s all right. I welcome differences of opinion.
I am just an ordinary citizen who is concerned about how my country is being governed and where it is heading, and I want to have my say, in my own small way.
I know there are many like me who care. I hope they, too, will come out and speak up, so that a multitude of voices can generate sufficient volume to penetrate the ears - and the hides - of the people who decide our present and plan our future.

Together, we can do our bit for a better Malaysia.
I wish to thank my publisher, Marshall Cavendish Singapore, for sponsoring these pages that carry my voice. And Christine Chong, Deputy Head of Marshall Cavendish Malaysia, not only for helping make this happen but also for her encouragement and assistance throughout my years of association with the company.
For allowing me to reproduce articles and interviews that originally appeared in their website or publication, I wish to thank Malaysiakini , MalaysianDigest.com , Free Malaysia Today , theSun , the Penang Economic Monthly , Kairos and Oon Yeoh. I also wish to record my appreciation for the work they are doing to create greater awareness among Malaysians.
