Sample Book Insights:
#1 We want to put forward a bold and honest analysis of the world around us, even if it creates tension with readers. We believe it is important to confront difficult issues honestly, even if that creates tension with friends and allies.
#2 Within the human family, we face a struggle for social justice in societies that do not operate in a manner consistent with widely held values concerning dignity, solidarity, and equality.
#3 The coming decades are likely to be marked by dramatic dislocations as a result of our social and ecological crises. We do not advocate nihilism, but we take seriously the biophysical limits of the ecosphere and human limits.
#4 We must have multiple working hypotheses to deal with the multiple cascading crises. We must understand and be able to deal with the crisis of consumption, which is easy to understand, but we must also understand and be able to deal with the crisis of meaning, which is not so easy.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

We want to put forward a bold and honest analysis of the world around us, even if it creates tension with readers. We believe it is important to confront difficult issues honestly, even if that creates tension with friends and allies.

#2

Within the human family, we face a struggle for social justice in societies that do not operate in a manner consistent with widely held values concerning dignity, solidarity, and equality.

#3

The coming decades are likely to be marked by dramatic dislocations as a result of our social and ecological crises. We do not advocate nihilism, but we take seriously the biophysical limits of the ecosphere and human limits.

#4

We must have multiple working hypotheses to deal with the multiple cascading crises. We must understand and be able to deal with the crisis of consumption, which is easy to understand, but we must also understand and be able to deal with the crisis of meaning, which is not so easy.

#5

We are two old white guys from the United States who have lived comfortably thanks to good retirement plans. We understand the need for critical self-reflection about identity, especially in this political and cultural moment. We believe we have something to offer that is important to consider.

#6

We have a lot of running room because we are financially stable and don’t have to worry about losing our jobs. We are old enough that we don’t care about risking whatever status we’ve acquired.

#7

A warning issued by 1,700 scientists in 1992 stated, Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. If we don’t change our current practices, we will irrevocably damage the environment and critical resources.

#8

We believe that the claims we make in this book are not only defensible, but crucial to consider if there is to be a decent human future.

#9

Self-reflection is important when it comes to identity. While both Jackson and Jensen share a similar social position, they come from different backgrounds and experiences.

#10

We are progressive hicks. In intellectual and political terms, we would be described as progressive left. In cultural terms, we are hicks because we still feel comfortable in those places.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

We are all the same kind of animal, and we are all distinctly different individuals. This is not a product of cultural differences, but rather how our species has evolved.
