Description

Far too often, people are introduced to a caricature of the conservative movement before they’ve actually heard what the average conservative has to say. In The Downfall of America , Jake Klausner presents a conservative perspective on the forces currently working to tear down long-standing American traditions and institutions. The book outlines the ways in which the Left has waged war against traditional American values and even reality itself. In an age of emotional appeals, it makes the conservative argument using logic and statistics. The challenge conveyed to the reader is simple, but critical: “Don’t let freedom be extinguished in your lifetime; make sure that it’s still there for your kids and theirs.”

CHAPTER 1 WHY I CARE
A Line in the Sand
For pretty much the entirety of my life, up until the last couple of years, I was completely apathetic towards politics. I just didn’t care about the vast majority of what was going on in the political sphere. Abortion was the one issue that I actually cared about, and I have always been pro-life. However, because I didn’t care much about most of what was going on in politics, I was egregiously uninformed about the state of our country. Sadly, I don’t think that this is uncommon in America today. I think there are far too many politically apathetic people in this country, and I am writing primarily for them. While I certainly hope that all sorts of different people read what I have to say, I really hope to somehow reach the people who are currently in the position that I was in just a few years ago. The demographic that I can have the most impact on is the people who have recently started paying attention to politics for the first time. These previously politically apathetic people are being constantly bombarded with Leftist talking points in all areas of life, but they aren’t seeing much of the conservative point of view. And even if they are, they are most likely hearing it from big name conservatives who the mainstream media has already falsely labeled as horrible bigots. People delving into the realm of politics are often being exposed to a caricature of conservatism before they’ve actually heard what conservatives have to say. I would hope that hearing a conservative point of view from someone who was also reluctant to engage in politics might allow for people to go in with a more open mind, ready to hear the truth and hear how conservatives respond to different issues.
I do need to make it clear that I grew up in a conservative household. My parents voted Republican, and they weren’t shy about their dislike of liberal policies. Additionally, as I said previously, I have always been strongly opposed to the idea of abortion. Because of these reasons, I certainly leaned to the Right for the entirety of my life. However, there was never much real conviction behind that leaning. I was perfectly comfortable staying out of political issues. After all, political issues had never really bothered me. What was going on in politics did not have any impact on my life as a middle school kid or as a high schooler. Even in college, political groups or individuals on campus could largely be ignored. And I was content with that exchange; I stay away from politics and politics doesn’t have an impact on me. This worked for a long time, but at a certain point, the realm of politics could no longer be ignored. And for me, the line in the sand was the government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic broke the parity of me and politics avoiding each other. The government forced the school that I teach at to shut down, although fortunately we reopened quicker than the majority of other schools in the area. The politicization of Covid-19 led to increasingly irrational fears among my friends and acquaintances, fears that completely baffled me. The various policies put in place to combat Covid-19 led people to turn on each other in such a dramatic way. Politics had forced its way into my life, and the lives of many people around the country, and I felt compelled to start paying attention to political issues.
As I started looking into the various political issues being hotly debated on the national stage, I began to see just how dire things had gotten in America. I tried my best to seek the truth. I read articles from various sources, to see how different sides of the aisle were presenting the same stories. I looked for actual video footage of different events, rather than focusing solely on the reporting surrounding the incidents, so that I could form my own opinions. Having a background in mathematics education, as I will come back to at several points throughout this book, I focused on finding raw data and statistics, not just the biased interpretations of said statistics. As I sought to find the truth and form my own opinions, I began to see several patterns emerge.
First, I noticed that conservatives were more often the ones arguing for transparency. They were better at referencing their sources to be open about where they were coming from, they played longer and less edited chunks of video footage to provide better context, and they were the ones arguing that we wait to know the facts of a situation before reacting. Second, I noticed that conservatives were the ones who advocated for consistent universal standards. The Left wanted standards to be different for whites and blacks, different for LGBTQ+ people and straight people, different for the elites and the average Americans, different for the vaccinated and unvaccinated, and different in so many other situations. If something is right or wrong for one person, it should also be so for another person in the same situation. However, the Left didn’t agree with that. Finally, I noticed that conservatives were arguing with logic and facts, whereas the Left was arguing with emotions and feelings. This will be a major theme covered throughout the book, and I will cover many cases where the facts back up the conservative point of view. But just to provide the easiest such example right off the bat, look no further than the transgender debate. Their entire argument is predicated on placing a person’s feelings over biological truth. Due to these three patterns that I noticed (transparency, consistent standards, and facts all trending to the Right), it quickly became clear and obvious which side aligned with truth and with my values.
Even though I recognized that conservatives were typically more truthful and useful as sources, I still continued to pay attention to sources that leaned the other direction. I signed myself up for the free subscription to the New York Times, so that I could read a few more articles each month while researching for this book. How many Leftists can say that they ever read articles from the Daily Wire? I would venture to say not very many. While watching conservative commentators, I noticed that they advocated for listening to the other side. Many of them played clips from Left wing activists in full context and provided a rebuttal. Meanwhile, Leftists focused on banning conservative voices from the various social media platforms. This drastic difference in attitude towards the freedom of speech of the opposition made it crystal clear to me that conservatives valued truth and the Left did not.
In some ways, I think that the unconstitutional government overreach during the Covid-19 pandemic was a positive thing. I don’t think that I was the only one who found this to be a line in the sand. I think that was a major wakeup call for a lot of people. And even if that wasn’t directly the wakeup call, seeing the horrendous state of the American education system over Zoom classes might have been. Regardless of when exactly it happened, what’s important is that you recognized that a line, or lines, had been crossed. By virtue of you taking the time to read this book, I am assuming that you’ve had your line in the sand crossed. However, if you have not reached that point yet, maybe my discussions of the forces tearing down our country will get you there. And once you realize just how much is at stake for the future of our country, as I did, I implore you to join in the fight to save America. There can be no going back to political apathy, not unless you’re willing to be a part of the generation that allows the downfall of America to come to fruition.
The Cost of Courage
Rob Smith, an army veteran and openly gay conservative, once said, “Honestly, coming out as conservative has been more of an earth-shattering, life-altering move for me, personally, than coming out as gay was.” In our culture today, being a part of the LGBTQ+ community is celebrated, and being a conservative is considered to be synonymous with being a bigot. And the reason for this is because the Left, who claims to be
