This is a thought-provoking original book, based on a wealth of empirical case studies of how Zimbabwe experienced illegal economic sanctions. It is a study of how the humanly constructed obstructions � from external remittances/finance flows into the country to finance embargos or total financial blockages � are deliberately created by so-called �powerful� governments to deal with an �errand� country. The infamous Zimbabwe Democracy Economic Recovery Act of 2001 (ZDERA) is part of a raft of punitive measures and discourses that the USA, UK and Europe used to make the economy, in the words of US�s Chester Crooker �scream�. It is the same �powerful� countries who allow their Multinational Corporations to loot while they impose sanctions against African governments and their peoples to make them scream. The book is an insightful contribution on Africa�s contemporary post-colonial liberation politics of development economics. It focuses on Zimbabwe as a synthesis of microcosmic study that provides accessible in-depth analysis of key aspects of sanctions as a weapon of control wielded by the so-called �powerful� governments of the Global North. Zimbabwe was clobbered with post-independence economic sanctions after its land reform programme, which benefitted its mostly colonially dispossessed African citizens. The land reform was intended as a reversal of colonial injustice and a counter restitutive measure against imperialism. The book invites the reader to see power differently: as compassion and the capacity to right past wrongs by protecting all and sundry from inequality and poverty. Sanctions, even when called targeted, are non-discriminatory as they affect ordinary citizens with the same ferocity and savagery as against intended target, albeit often missing the target. Sanctions are lethal. Sanctions are a graveyard for the poor, weak and vulnerable. This is an idea of power that the Global North failed to grasp when they decided to punish the Mugabe government for daring to contemplate justice and restitution.

Dedication & Homage To my father ‘Think Quickly and Act’ – Mr Ishmael Mujere Mararike: An educationist and philanthropist “The Headmaster”. After pioneering at Goromonzi High School in 1946, he established Mukondomi School in 1952 in Buhera, Manicaland. I also dedicate this book to the suffering children of the State of Palestine: they bore the ugliest brunt of fighting against imperialism and occupation with only one weapon at their disposal: ‘rekeni’ or David’s biblical sling!

About the Author Munoda Mararike is anAlma Mater Studiorumthe University of of Zimbabwe (UZ) where he was student leader in the Student Representative Council (SRC) in 1986, graduates with a Bachelor of Arts and a BSc Special Honours degree in Sociology. Munoda was involved in students’ politics through theSociety of African Studiesand The Focus, andStudents’ Eye, magazines. Munoda, a holder of a Diploma in Personnel Management and various certificates in Training and Human Capital Development gained post-graduate qualifications at the University of Central England in Birmingham - PG Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) & Master’s in Business Administration (MBA). Munoda also holds post-graduate qualifications in Teaching in Higher Education from University of Northampton, UK and a Diploma in Higher Education from University of London at St Georges. He read for his Doctorate in the Department of Law and Politics at London Middlesex University. He remains a stoic fighter against imperialism, neo-colonialism and economic sanctions. Munoda is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy.Areas of focus: Political Sociology, Liberation Struggle politics, labour migration and diasporic transitions; decolonialism critical theory.

Preface to the First Edition Munoda Mararike’s“Zimbabwe will Never be a Colony Again!” Sanctions and Anti-Imperialist Struggles in Zimbabwe is a thought-provoking original book. It is structured in Africa’s contemporary post-colonial liberation politics of development economics. This exciting publication uses Zimbabwe as a synthesis of microcosmic study that provide accessible in-depth analysis of key aspects of sanctions as a weapon of control wielded by the so-called ‘powerful’ governments. We see power differently. You can be powerful because of your humanity and human-ness – and that is what we believe to be supreme. Nations can equally be powerful by showing compassion and solitude to the poor and disadvantaged and not ruthlessness. Powerful nations should not fight the poor citizens of other countries with fire because it is, ironically, those poor citizens whose wealth has provided them with fire in the first place. Sanctions, even when called targeted, are non-discriminatory as they affect ordinary citizens with the same ferocity and savagery as against intended target, albeit often missing the target. Sanctions are lethal in that they are discriminatory often contrasting the rich and poor, the rulers and those who are ruled. Sanctions are a graveyard for the poor, weak and vulnerable.
