This book is dedicated to Susan Taylor, my former International Student Advisor at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, USA. "Home is where the heart is" and some people have a way of opening their heart and home to you, whether you are near or far from your own home. They extend their warmth to make you welcome, helping you feel that you belong.
To my readers, my wish is that, as you read this book, you will feel as welcome in Gaeta as I felt in Vancouver. My heartfelt thanks for making me feel special. I shall always remember your kindness, Susan.

FOREWORD
I was in the Navy Reserves in 2001 and after 9/11 I was recalled to Gaeta, Italy. I have never been to a country that was so beautiful, historic, friendly ... and oh yes had such amazing FOOD!!!
One day as I was walking from my boarding house up the hill to where I was stationed, a young man began jogging beside me. As he began speaking in flawless English (even though he was Italian), I found out that this was Nicola. We became fast friends. He showed me his hometown of Gaeta which included walking up Montagna Spaccata (Split Mountain) where locals say that the mountain was split into three the moment Christ died. We went to the Grotto of the Turk deep in the mountain and it still gives me chills thinking of it today.
But certainly one of the best things about Gaeta is the beaches - they are so beautiful. I daily walked the beaches and I've never been as healthy as everyone who walks every where. It was heart-warming to see young couples playing with their children in the park as the older couples would hold hands while walking. Gaeta is a very special place where you walk everywhere and never think of crime.
From the beautiful churches, some of which were built in 915, to walking on the beaches, to just walking around looking at the beautiful Italian people just living life, I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to live and experience Gaeta.
I will never forget Nicola and his generosity in giving his time and interpreting abilities to making my stay in Gaeta the best ever. If you are ever in Gaeta, find Nicola - for he will make your visit to Italy a lifetime memory.
Follow Nicola's advice and you will fall in love with Gaeta, as I did. Before you leave, you will already be planning your return to Gaeta.
Enjoy your holiday!

VISITORS’ MEMORIES

Gaeta was special because it was really the first scene in my mind of Italy. When we landed at Rome airport we were utterly exhausted and I couldn't stay awake once we got in the car to ride to Gaeta, but when I woke up and we were rounding one of those beautiful curves around the ocean and I saw the sun setting, I was amazed at what beauty my eyes beheld. The sun was brilliantly reflecting off the water and the scene was like something from a movie or a postcard.

I arrived in '93 and instantly fell in love with the city, the country and its people. The beach, the restaurants, the churches, the bars - everything was enticing. My wife is from there. Gaeta is so gorgeous that I want to retire there. I was on the Belknap and the La Salle and I was up on Monte Orlando from 1998 to 2001. My wife and I will return to Gaeta someday - when I turn 60. I look forward to buying an apartment in the district San Erasmo and going boating and going to the beach on a regular basis.

I wanted to go to Italy to have all the best of Italy; old villages with cozy restaurants and local delis, but also with sea and beaches— so I found Gaeta . The old town was picturesque, with inviting mountains to walk and a sea view. It was so easy to come from Rome airport. I can recommend Gaeta for everybody who wants an easygoing, peaceful life among local people while still having the choice to enjoy the beach. See you in Italy! It's the best !

I recently had the wonderful pleasure of staying in Gaeta. This small town has almost everything you could possibly want—the beach, the mountains, and old charm combined with new convenience. It was the perfect hub to travel all around Italy. Gaeta was easily reached in a small amount of travel time from many exciting destinations. I had the joy of walking along the small bustling streets and experiencing the every day life of the true Italian. I had my fair share of outstanding fresh fish and awesome fresh pasta. We spent time on the beach as well as walking in the hills and experiencing the wonderful, breath-taking views of the grotto. I would say it is a must on the list of places to visit when in Italy. I can't wait to see it again.

Gaeta is a hidden treasure. You would rarely just stumble upon it since it is a little off the beaten path. It is just an hour from Naples , but you probably won't find it in the tour books. The locals know that it is a wonderful place to get away from the bustle and noise of the big cities (Tourists love to know where the locals go). It is such a beautiful city with the mountains on one side and the beach on the other. There are spectacular views from every direction. The beautiful beach will make you think you are in paradise. It attracts all kinds of people so you don't have to be self -conscious about how you look in your swimsuit. The people are happy and friendly. You can watch the fishermen sail up in the afternoon and take their fresh "catch" to the market. You can see some amazing fish. There are restaurants and traditional Italian food, but you can also get a slice of watermelon from a local street vendor and sit on the curb in the sun while it drips down your chin. Wednesday brings an exciting market to town with travelling merchants selling everything from clothes to make up. The story about the crack in the rock originating at the death of Christ is fascinating. Seeing the city from the water is also a treat on the small boats that round the big rock and sail to the beach.

Gaeta is a resort town located along the Aegean Sea. It is a reminder of the sweet life of Italy and attracts Italians as well as tourists world-wide. Old Gaeta takes you back in time to historic brick roads and 13th century churches. In the present day, Gaeta boasts of the best restaurants in Southern Italy and is full of modern day boutiques. In the summer the small city is frequented by the most expensive yachts in the world and the beaches are crowded by Italians from all over the region.

I have very fond memories of Gaeta. The city is steeped in history, tradition and beauty. For anyone who desires a nice mix of old and contemporary Italy, Gaeta is certainly a place that can satisfy any visitor. The people of Gaeta are it's greatest asset where will one find the kindness and compassion that make Gaeta a true joy to visit. A stroll down Via della Indipendenza at night with its shops, open-air market and townsfolk is truly an experience that will add to one's enjoyment. Any journey to Gaeta is not complete without a visit to Montagna Spaccata where one can see a perfect marriage of land and sea, history and faith. The view of Serapo Beach is breathtaking and the mountains surrounding the city look down on the city and the bay with awe, splendor and admiration as if to say "this is our home and you are welcome to stay as long as you like". Gaeta is truly a remarkable destination for anyone who wants to enjoy the natural beauty and history fused with the architectural majesty of the Italian culture and its people. There are many places in Italy which tourists will flock to but none as perfectly wonderful as Gaeta.
