Dedicated to my amazing husband, Roy; my wonderful three children: Summer, Heather, and Zach (who took the photos of me on the cover and back of this book); and all my supportive family and friends who have encouraged me to put my words into a book for others to enjoy and learn from. I also want to thank God for giving me the opportunity to share what I have learned to those young ladies seeking to rise up fast in this great wo rld!
Preface
When it comes to business there, is a big difference between men and women. In the past, the difference was vastly different in opportunity and pay. But today, things are different, meaning the opportunity and high pay are now available to women . . . on par to that of many men, but you have to know a few facts before expecting those opportunities and large salaries to come your way. But who is there to tell you what you need to know? No one. Not because people do not know these things. It is because time moves so fast, very few have stopped moving at lightning speed for a few days or months to write down some helpful tips for young women seeking those harder-to-get, higher-paying j obs.
If you are a young aspiring female entering a male dominant field of business, this book can help you find a quicker path to that higher-paying job offer or promot ion.
These unspoken truths about big business and how women are perceived is something that most books you will read just don’t address. Why? Well, part of making it big in business for women is having to prove your worth. Since there are known current biases out there in the big blue world, there is no doubt that men naturally are given the benefit of the doubt. However, once you know that we women really have to prove our worth, and just how to properly do that, then promotions do indeed come . . . but only after some very careful review by more than one person in managem ent.
Most companies today will only take a chance on promoting a female for a very high-paying, high-profile role if that woman has proven to have the right mind-set, the right character to handle the most trying of situations. Stereotypes for women typically typecast women as being way too emotional to be trusted with very sensitive or challenging topics or situations. There is that worry that maybe a woman isn’t strong enough to take the critical issues involved with certain decision-making processes. In addition, since women are known to be very chatty at times, can women really be trusted with keeping our mouths shut when that is needed? These are all items that are considered before a particular female is given the nod to have the opportunity to advance to the highest levels of the organization. It has to be a unanimous or majority vote among the top echelon of the company, and this is for good reason. Once an executive rises to the higher levels, the responsibilities to be right in their actions are even more criti cal.
As I have reached a more mature level of understanding now on how this whole preconceived notion of women being “way too emotional is such a big deal,” I have learned ways to make sure this doesn’t keep me from advancing in my career where possible. The key is to make sure you are known as being passionate about your goals and that passion should never be to the level of tears, if possible. Unless they are tears of joy, of course. In general, women need to be putting in the work to keep leading them forw ard.
It is also very important that women today start at a very early age in putting their best foot forward in trying to make a name for themsel ves.
It is not easy to do, as the very fact that women (because of a very old but still relevant perception) are supposed to stay home and take care of their spouse and children. For many years, women have been told it is better to be seen and not heard. To be somewhat subservient and supportive of a man was considered the best way to go about your day. Women were just not thought of being as smart, as dominant, as controlling, as creative as men.
This is just a very hard perception to change overnight. Women have been doing amazing things for thousands of years, but to survive and succeed in today’s business world, especially in a male-dominated, technical field is still a challenge. Getting a good handle on how to start off on the right path is something school books and many best-sellers of today won’t addr ess.
Part of this stems from the fact that men won’t write about this, and women who know these basic facts about women and how they are perceived by big business know that much of this knowledge just has to come from experience. Women just are forced to “earn their stripes” so to speak, to earn the right to be promoted or recognized as a fantastic leader. No book can really teach this; it must be earned through hard work—that is it. And this is very true, but this book is not meant to replace that required effort; it is meant to help make that hard work count more and be more impactful on the results . . . and to get positive results much fas ter.
Skeptics can say for every comment made in this book, there are many exceptions, and this is true. So all this book is meant to do is from my point of view, state what I have seen in my life as key things that I wished someone would have told me about earlier. Had I known all the things I know now, I may have lived a less frustrated life in many situations. I may have had less self-doubt in certain parts of my younger life. I may have felt better about who I was and who I would become. I had two of the most supportive parents, and a very supportive family, so I am not complaining at all about my upbringing. I had it good growing up. But what I am talking about are those stages in the business world, experiences where life challenges you. Especially when you enter a field that is mainly dominated by males, there are times when being a female puts you in a position of less power, or perceived less power, so just knowing the things I know today helped me to live each day with much more confidence and happiness. I think much of this had to be learned through experience, but I think, since this book helps put some major concepts in better perspective, I do believe this book can really help those very eager young women (and young men who may not have that confidence they want just yet) out there seeking to make it big f ast!
Let’s be real. There are many companies that offer females high-level roles; it just depends upon the industry. This book focuses on the female looking to enter a predominantly male-dominated industry. Why? Because this author feels that not enough books are written to support those young women looking to contribute in a field where few women have been leaders before. I am one who always liked to root for the underdog, and this book is no different. If I wrote a book on how a man should succeed in big business, no one would read the book. It just wouldn’t cause enough interest because most high-paying jobs out there are held by men today and have been for many ye ars.
Also, there are tons of books on how to self-help, but how many are geared specifically for women looking to succeed in a male-dominated industry? Books that focus on how women see and feel things slightly differently than men are often difficult to find. Women do think and feel differently about situations that face them, and this book tries to help us women see things from the right perspective. As there are always different ways to look at the same situation, knowing the full and right context of any given situation helps. This book addresses t hat.
As women, we need a primer on how to act properly to get the results we want. It is hard to act correctly when you don’t know the ru les.
Not all men will give us the rules up-front. Not because they are not willing to; it is more due to the fact that they do want to see us as women step it up and earn it. At the higher levels of a company, men have to see traits in a woman that make them feel comfortable with that person. They have to “trust” that person. There can be no doubts in their minds as to how that female will react once they are in that higher-level posit ion.
If an executive of a major corporation is honest, they will tell you that in order to rise to the highest level of the company, as a female, you must be groomed for that leadership. This is not something that is learned overnight. It requires mentorship and coaching. It requires someone to help the female prepare for her future in the right way.
Men go through a grooming process too, but it is different with men. With men, the grooming process is more about signs of leadership that individual must show when performing certain tasks or completing certain proje cts.
With women, it is more about how that female will appear to others in their actions and overall “look.” Will the work that the
