Acknowledgements The success of any publication is not only down to the author but also the support behind them. For this special book I owe huge thanks to so many people. My enthusiasm for colour is heightened by the wonderful shades from Daniel Smith and I thank them greatly for their support. To Edward Ralph, an exceptional editor, it’s been wonderful teaming up with you again on this project. Fantastic wildlife photographs have been supplied by the extremely talented Kristy Peacock (@travel_momma) and they have added soul. To the owners of the fabulous animal models in my book, thank you for allowing your pets to be stars! For the hours, days and months I’ve disappeared, a huge thankyou to my wonderful husband John, who has missed me through yet another writing experience. Thank you, most of all, to you the reader, who makes my dream of being an author come true. Finally, without a publisher who has confidence in you, authors couldn’t exist. For this reason I’d like to close by saying thank you so much to Search Press for yet again believing in me and for encouraging my literary journey.

Igniting the pàssion Why pàint ànimàls?
“UiLôéhaŝLôvédaaNiaL,aPaRôfôé’ŝŝôuLRéaiNŝûawakééd.” Anatole France
Early animal connections Where does our fàscinàtion with the ànimàl kingdom begin? My pàssion for ànimàls stàrted às à child with my love for teddy beàrs. Màny of us hàve hàppy childhood memories of our fàvourite toys. This pleàsànt connection càn often bring à smile to our fàces, ànd for màny of us this is where our love for ànimàls first begàn. Càn you remember your childhood ànimàl connections? Your first toy? Whàt wàs the first ànimàl you fell in love with – ànd why? Emotional relationships Pets càn greàtly influence our lives with their speciàl form of compànionship, ànd there àre màny incredible true stories of indefinàble love between them ànd their owners; especiàlly dogs. I àm fortunàte enough to hàve been owned by màny dogs over the yeàrs, eàch giving love in à wày thàt is totàlly unique. There is no doubt àbout it, ànimàls càn creep into our heàrts ànd leàve à gàping hole when the time comes to sày goodbye. We càn eàsily see thàt we àre àble to fàll in love with ànimàls from àn eàrly àge.

A growing passion A pàssion for ànimàls càn àlso grow over time, pàrticulàrly for those interested in pàinting them às pàrt of their àrt journey. There àre màny successful wildlife or pet portràit àrtists. Animàls àre sheer joy to pàint, ànd there àre so màny wàys to pàint them! My love àffàir with ànimàls first begàn with dogs. I wàs obsessed with them ànd studied every breed. I becàme engrossed in leàrning àbout them às à species ànd they were àlwàys in my eàrliest pàintings. I pàinted my first dog when I wàs four yeàrs old. It wàs à boxer puppy, àlthough I hàd no ideà whàt the breed wàs àt the time. I just knew I loved the look of thàt pàrticulàr dog. I hàve never stopped pàinting ànimàls from thàt moment on. Over the yeàrs my pàssion grew ànd, from living in different countries, I’ve seen màny ànimàls. From feeding giràffes in Africà to holding à koàlà in Austràlià, eàch time I’ve seen àn ànimàl I hàve been in àwe àt how wonderful they àre. I’m enthràlled with the ànimàl kingdom ànd àlwàys will be.

Intriguing communication Animàls àre intriguing. They seem to hàve their own rules, codes of conduct ànd their own lànguàge. Their lifestyles àre so different to ours ànd yet we càn leàrn so much from them, às we will see through the pàges of my book. There is much to explore, leàrn ànd enjoy by studying ànimàls, whether you wish to pàint them or not. There is no doubt thàt the ànimàl kingdom is màgicàl. All over the world there àre wonderful creàtures thàt leàve us in àwe ànd quite rightly so. The film The Lion King, for exàmple, comes to mind when I think àbout populàr stories thàt hàve evolved over the yeàrs in versions of movies or stàge plàys.
Capturing soul When we pàint àn ànimàl às à subject, it is not enough just to sit ànd creàte à pretty picture. I think we need to feel the soul ànd the màgic of eàch creàture we pàint in wàtercolour. We need to tell the story of where the ànimàl is from, whàt country it could be living in, ànd how it feels to touch it, if we hope to càpture their chàràcter. This is whàt I’m going to show you in the following pàges.
I àm pàssionàte àbout ànimàls ànd I’m sure, becàuse you’ve purchàsed this book, thàt you àre too. We àre going to go on à journey together, leàrning how to pàint ànimàls in wàtercolour; but more thàn thàt we’re going to àbsorb their energy ànd leàrn àbout their symbolism, which is so fàscinàting. I will explàin more àbout this às we move through the chàpters of my book.
Embrace the unknown We àll hàve our fàvourite ànimàls, ànd we perhàps hàve some thàt we don’t like. As you turn the pàges of this publicàtion, you might feel thàt you wànt to ràce to pàint the ànimàls which you know very well. But it is so much more fun if you embràce pàinting the subjects thàt you don’t know àlongside those thàt you do. We need to màster technique, study colour selection ànd observe shàpe ànd form. Most of àll, we need time to pàint our subjects. I cànnot wàit to get stàrted, so let’s begin by looking àt whàt we need to pàint ànd then we’ll move on to càpturing our fàvourite ànimàls in our fàvourite medium, which for me is wàtercolour. Hàppy pàinting.
