PREFACE
As I do most days, I visit Nonna Maria. This time, she has a little surprise for me. She shows me a cookie box, and tells me it contains a collection of old postcards of Gaeta that Nonno Nicola had collected for years.
Intrigued, I open the box and see about 20 envelopes, each filled with postcards. Each envelope is perfectly tied with string, which is no surprise, since Nonno was incredibly precise and orderly. A note on each envelope indicates how many cards it contains and what they represent.
I open one envelope and begin to look at it: amazing! The cards are beautiful! I admire them for hours, while Nonna comments on the images of Gaeta in an earlier age. Nonno Nicola has also noted the date and a description on the back of each card. Nonna says that Nonno wanted them to go to Nicolino.
Now that I have them, I never tire of admiring them; they help me understand the history of my city and how Gaeta has changed in the last few decades. I hope you enjoy looking at this collection!

SIEGE OF GAETA 1860 - 1861
The fortress of Gaeta was the last refuge of Francis II of Bourbon , King of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies . In Gaeta he put forth a vigorous resistance to the advancing Piedmontese Army . The surrender of Gaeta on February 13, 1861 proclaimed the end of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies and the birth of the Kingdom of Italy . These postcards reproduce the paintings of Carlo Bossoli.
