Description

Josie Iselin, the author of Abrams’ popular Heart Stones, turns to sea glass hearts for a companion volume that promises to be just as appealing. Beachcombers the world over treasure sea glass—the shards of broken glass that are tumbled by the waves into smooth, pebblelike forms. They know which colors are common (green and brown) and which are unusual (black, yellow, red, and, especially, orange) and they can often identify the age and origin of a specimen. On rare occasions, sea glass takes the shape of a heart, the universal symbol of love. In Sea Glass Hearts, Iselin assembles an inspiring collection of these precious objects that are free for the taking—if you are lucky enough to find them!

Extrait

Beachcombers treasure sea glass. For millennia, glass, mostly in the form of bottles, has been thrown into the sea. It is broken into small shards that are then smoothed into rounded shapes by wave and sand, in much the same way beach stones are formed. Serious collectors learn about the different varieties of glass and the rarity and origins of different colors, but they have no advantage over the casual seeker in the quest for sea glass.
In Sea Glass Hearts , Josie Iselin offers a rare and exquisite collection. As in her previous Heart Stones , she focuses on heart-shaped specimens that carry a special meaning to all who find them, and uses a photographic technique that makes them glow with color. Her poetic text evokes the moment of discovery and reminds us that love and honor and authenticity and other qualities we strive for are as elusive, beautiful, and attainable as sea glass hearts glittering in the surf and sand.

introduction

While glass heart implies something fragile and easily broken, those of us who wander the beach and collect sea glass know better. We understand how durable and tough our mermaids tears are-how brilliant and evocative, how worldly and worn. A sea glass heart will not break. It will spread its message with sincerity and joy. It will last forever. When a glint at the water s edge reveals itself to be a sea glass heart, no matter whether startling blue, unheard-of red, or the most common white, we feel blessed.
The heart is an interesting symbol. The shape occurs freely in nature; we find hearts everywhere we look. And yet we cannot help but see them as special, a sign of something out there speaking to us. Glass, and especially sea glass, is also rich in implication. It is a true testament to human ingenuity: to mix quartz sand, soda, and lime, add some color by way of a trace element such as cobalt or copper, and fabricate a useful object. And yet sea glass feels like a natural thing, rendered up to us by
the ocean. It is, in fact, elementally of the beach, composed of quartz sand, or silica, and carbonate sand, or lime, which is derived from bits of seashells and coral compressed over millions of years into limestone.
As plastic replaces everyday glass, we feel nostalgia for bottles and the stories behind them, collected piece by piece along the shoreline. When one of these frosted shards is a heart, however, this unassuming valentine simply embodies the romance of the beach and is thrust into our pocket with a smile. We can only wonder how the forces of the sea conspired to forge this tiny symbol of love.
