The Plan
A Glympse into Dad
The Plan
My father made me laugh with his timeless rhymes! Not much does that.
He said:
“MY PLAN WAS TO HAVE A PICTURE FOR EACH POEM. UNFORTUNATELY, I DON’T DRAW VERY WELL. I HAD TO FIND SOMEONE WHO COULD DRAW BETTER THAN I.
THE QUESTION WAS — WHO? WHO COULD DO A BETTER JOB THAN I OF DRAWING A PICTURE TO MATCH EACH POEM? THE ANSWER WAS EASY.
ALMOST ANYBODY.
AND THAT INCLUDES YOU. SO —
UDUIT!”
Memorize them, and make friends laugh at lunch. Copy them in calligraphy. Make each a work of art.
But most of all, he would have wanted you to
ENJOY YOURSELF!
A Glympse into Dad
My father was not one to have anyone talk about him, being a very private person; however, Mom and he were amazing parents. He would work all day and come home to play hide and seek with my brother and me, Canasta with the whole family, and take us on rides around the farm area to see deer, more of a rarity in those days.
I remember one day the whole family was returning home and he saw a pile of rags in the snow at the end of our lane. It turned out to be an extremely intoxicated indigenous man whom Dad brought home, fed, and when our visitor had sobered up a bit, talked with us. He told us about how he worked on high-rises in the city. Dad made him hot food, hot coffee to take with him, and the entire family drove him to a bus station where Dad gave him money and wished him the best.
