Book title            Hilarious Plays by Joann
The apartment complex in NYC where I lived 50 years was the site of a play-writing group that met monthly for live readings. It was there my playwriting career was born.
The play “Maggie’s Tavern” is taken from real life in Darboy WI where an unkempt old farmer eventually sold his farm for commercial development. My mother was a widow running a tavern and the farmer had a crush on her.
The musical Org’s Orchard has basis in real life where my brother Org has an orchard. He was renamed by spellcheck and has many of the characteristics of the fictional Org.
The song-heavy musicals demonstrate my love of hilarious rhymes.
My first song “School is Kiddy Prison” is my opinion of the school system. It gave rise to Kidokrats, a musical that gives power to children while getting laughs.
In Nursing Home Blues a resident decides to throw a farewell party while he is alive and can invite guests of his choice.
Special thanks to Ben Sugimori who studied music at NYU and lived in my apartment building. Lucky for me. He arranged songs 20 years ago and recently helped again. Niece Lori Sprangers Doyle arranged “Wonderful Obituary” 20 years ago. I did not keep careful track of arrangers, never considering a book at the time. Alas with pressure mounting to finish the book, I was forced to do old lady arrangements on a number of the songs.. They stand out for the wrong reason.
Hope you enjoy the shows.

Angel of the Beyond

Josh has always been in love with Lilly who does not return the feelings. Josh wishes Lilly would see on the outside his beautiful soul so asks the Angel of the Beyond to create such a miracle.

SCRIPT
Josh and Lilly meet on a path in the park.
Josh
Ah, Lilly. You’re as beautiful as ever.
Lilly
Thank you again and again, Josh.
Josh
Every time we meet, I must ask you the same question. Is there not a way you can see it in your heart to love me? Can we not begin seeing one another?
Lilly
I do like you a lot, Josh, but I’ve been trying to be honest with you right from the start. I do not feel that wonderful spell of love for you. There is no longing to see you. There are none of the things that make love magic.
Josh
You know I have loved you from the very moment I laid eyes on you when we were young and in school. I could not wait to get to school in the morning to see your beautiful face. You are all I have ever wanted.
Lilly
I am sorry, Josh. It is sad that my very existence causes you such pain but there is nothing I can do about it.
Josh
I have been praying that someday you will change your mind. That something will happen that will cause you to see me differently.
Lilly
Remember it is said that one should never pray to alter the free will of another. Should you not pray instead to find love where it might really be? Let your heart fly free to find another. It is not wise to focus on the unattainable.
Josh
Unattainable? That word is like a knife through my heart. I cannot accept that you will always be unattainable. I long for a miracle from the heavens that will open your heart to me.
Lilly
Josh, Josh. No, no, no. This cannot be so. This will never be so. I know my heart well and there is not the tiniest spark for you and there never has been.
Josh
Goodbye for now, lovely Lilly. This cannot and will not be my final attempt. No. I shall try again when we next meet.
Lilly
Goodbye, Josh.

(Lilly leaves)
Josh
I must change my destiny somehow. It has been said that one should never call upon the Angel of the Beyond to change one’s destiny because the change alters too many unknowns. If one thing is changed, all things about our lives are affected. But it is a chance I must take if I am ever to capture Lilly’s heart. I shall ask the Angel of the Beyond to grant me this wish. That my soul may shine through my body so it appears to Lilly as I am inside. I have always been a kind, loving, virtuous, beautiful person. But this mediocre body my soul inhabits does not do me justice. If my body would reflect my soul, I will have a chance to win Lilly’s heart. Oh Angel of the Beyond, I call upon you to answer my prayer I beg of you.

(Angel of the Beyond appears)
Angel
Your prayer has been heard. I have been sent to discuss with you the possibility of answering your request.
Josh
Is my soul not beautiful?
Angel
Yes, you are right. You have an extraordinarily beautiful soul. Your compassion and kindness to others has slowly transformed your soul to a very high level.
Josh
Is it not fitting that my soul should shine through this rather plain body?
Angel
There are usually good reasons to allow all human events to unfold as they naturally will. Such is the correct order of things and best left as is. There are always desires among humans to leap forward or alter the direction of the future. Whereas I would normally not fulfill a request such as yours, there is something pleasing about a beautiful soul’s desire to shine through its body. But I must warn you the decision is fraught with unexpected consequences. You must be willing to accept these potential consequences.
Josh
I have only one reason for this request.
Angel
There must be a serious reason for this to occur. A reason for which there is no other answer. Because it can alter your life in ways you do not now understand. It is an altered dimension of the future that you will enter where nothing is the same as it now is.
Josh
I have a most serious reason. It is to have a chance to win the heart of my beautiful, lovely Lilly. Should I suddenly become extraordinarily good looking, she may find me irresistible.
Angel
It is not always good to work too much magic to win the affections of another human.
Josh
My life has come to a standstill. I can think of nothing else. All the goals I should have for my life have paled and fallen by the wayside because of my obsession to have Lilly. Should I get her hand, I could use my talents for good on the earth. Right now I am stuck.
Angel
Your wish can be granted
