Description

Each of the 50 record-shaped cards in this conversation deck is printed with a music-themed question on each side (100 questions total). The questions range in format: some invoke songs that are tied to memories (name a song from your school dance); others prompt you to choose an ideal soundtrack for a hypothetical situation (if you were a major league baseball player, what song would blast when you're up to bat?); some cards aim to get people comparing their favorite (and not-so-favorite) music moments. Created expressly to start a conversation about the music people love and the personal insights that their favorite songs evoke, Songversations is the perfect gift for serious audiophiles, casual listeners, and everyone in between.

HOW TO THROW A LISTENING PARTY

You can play SONGVERSATIONS anywhere and with anyone, but here s

what you ll need to play it my favorite way:

A good speaker system that people can easily play music on

A service that streams music on demand (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube etc.)

Four to eight music lovers

Pizza or a potluck style dinner

Wine and beer-or make a specialty cocktail for the evening (only for those 21+ please)

Seats facing the speakers so everyone can hear the music and each other

The TV turned off and cell phones put away (it will be OK, I promise!)
One cold February night, I invited some friends over to my New

York City apartment to listen to music. I d grown tired of feeling

isolated with my music, having only my iPod and earbuds to keep

me company. I was craving the old days of sharing music with

people face-to-face. That night we turned the volume up loud

and talked about our lives, the music, and how it all fit together.

The neighbors complained the next day, but it was worth it.

SONGVERSATIONS

was born.

I created this book to bring you closer to the people in your

life and to help you share the music you love. While a listening

party is my favorite way to use this deck, there s no right way to

play, and the conversations don t need to be confined to music.

The questions are about music but each one is an invitation to

talk about memories, aspirations, likes, and dislikes. You can play

SONGVERSATIONS

at the dinner table, on a car trip, or if you re

waiting to be rescued while trapped under a huge rock. Playing the

songs for one other is wonderful and easy (thanks to the internet

and streaming services), but it is also optional.

I hope these questions lead you to discover new music and new things

about the people in your life. Enjoy!

CHEERS, ERIC HUTCHINSON

THE START OF A SONGVERSATION
HOW TO PLAY SONGVERSATIONS

The object of SONGVERSATIONS is to have fun listening to music and talking

about it! Here are two different ways to use this book, but feel free to do

whatever gets the party started.

I .

ORIGINAL

Start by selecting a page randomly

and reading the question on SIDE A

aloud to the group. Respond to the

question by giving an introduction

and playing a song. Half of the fun

for the group is not knowing what

song will be played, so for height-

ened drama do not reveal your

song s title. Instead, tell a little story

about the song and then hit play.

EXAMPLE:

What s a song you used to love

but now can t stand? What ruined it for you?

I loved this song until I worked at an ice

cream shop one summer. They played it

constantly and I had to hear it four times a

day while I scooped!

Plays Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet.

While your song plays, others should

chime in with their own stories about

the song, facts about the band,

questions, or memories associated

with your selection.

This discussion is the whole point of

SONGVERSATIONS. The more you

share about yourself, the more the

SONGVERSATION tends to grow!

Go around the room until everyone in

the group has had a chance to choose

and play a song for this question.

Then pick a new page.

II .

QUICK DRAW

A page is selected randomly and

the question is posed to the entire

group. The person with the quickest

response to the question can speak

up first, while others gather their

thoughts and chime in. Maybe a

song or two is played if the group

discovers a common love or is eager

to hear something new. Additional

questions are selected as needed to

keep the conversation going and

the music playing.
THE QUESTIONS FALL INTO FIVE CATEGORIES

NOTE:

Each card has a SIDE B question-a follow up to SIDE A. Feel free

to flip the cards over and read SIDE B at any point to stimulate further

conversation and more song sharing.

Questions for sharing music-related memories.

Questions to get you talking about the music you love.

Questions that let you vent about music you don t love.

Questions for talking about live music experiences.

Questions that ask you to choose a soundtrack for

hypothetical situations.
