Sample Book Insights:
#1 My mother was a showgirl dancer who met my father in Berlin in 1950. They fell in love and got married, but my father was thirty-eight years old and my mother was just seventeen when I was born. My mother had a restrictive life, even though Berlin was a big city with plenty of violent crime.
#2 My father was constantly fighting with my mother and me, and I had no self-esteem. I was afraid of my parents and afraid of school. I was a child child child.
#3 I liked everything that seemed rebellious. I would go to see the movie The Mummy with my mother, or The Ten Commandments on my own. The film was six hours long, so they had an intermission where they opened the exit doors so everyone could go outside and smoke a cigarette.
#4 I had to live in a fantasy world when I was in the army. The real world was too fucked up for me. I would go to the Minute Market and steal all the glue and model paint I could, then put the glue in a bag and sniff it.

#1

My mother was a showgirl dancer who met my father in Berlin in 1950. They fell in love and got married, but my father was thirty-eight years old and my mother was just seventeen when I was born. My mother had a restrictive life, even though Berlin was a big city with plenty of violent crime.

#2

My father was constantly fighting with my mother and me, and I had no self-esteem. I was afraid of my parents and afraid of school. I was a child child child.

#3

I liked everything that seemed rebellious. I would go to see the movie The Mummy with my mother, or The Ten Commandments on my own. The film was six hours long, so they had an intermission where they opened the exit doors so everyone could go outside and smoke a cigarette.

#4

I had to live in a fantasy world when I was in the army. The real world was too fucked up for me. I would go to the Minute Market and steal all the glue and model paint I could, then put the glue in a bag and sniff it.

#5

I had many friends in Pirmasens, but around my building, the kids would sit on the swings and spit at each other. If anyone brought marbles or toy soldiers to the playground, the other kids would surely lift them. We were mean and hateful, and all had the same problems - fathers who drank themselves to death and beat up moms.

#6

I had to meet Krudd after school for a rematch, and he was going to beat the shit out of me. I pulled a blade on him, and he backed off. I lost his friendship, but I never expected too much anyway.

#7

I was a loser at age 12, and I knew it. I couldn’t see a future for myself. I thought the only thing I could hope to do was join the army. I didn’t even make it for a week in the Boy Scouts.

#8

I had rock’n’roll, which gave me a sense of my own identity. I would spend hours walking around the woods in Pirmasens, looking for castles and bunkers. I would also go into bombed buildings and vacant shell-scarred lots to look for more war relics to sell to antique shops.

#9

I would listen to the rock’n’roll on the Armed Forces radio shows, stuff like Dang Me by Roger Miller. I would also go to the PX snack bar and get a cheeseburger and a chocolate milkshake. I would read 16 and Hit Parade magazines about groups like the Monkees, Paul Revere and The Raiders, and Dino, Desi, and Billy.

#10

My parents had gotten a divorce. I was packed and ready to leave, but my father started yelling and acting out over thirty-five cents. We had to run for our lives.

#11

I started drifting into Manhattan, taking the subway to the Village. I met my new friend Egg on Queens Boulevard, and we each took a Blue Flat. Our other friends asked us if we had done it before, and we said Yeah, sure. It was a beautiful trip.
