Insights from Chapter 1
#1
I had always dreamed of being a famous singer. In 1989, I signed a deal with Arista Records, and a year later, I put out my first single, Good Life. It wasn’t a hit, but we were still over the moon.
#2
I was the eldest of three sisters, and I was in charge of picking out our stage outfits. We flew to L. A. to audition for LaFace Records, and we were all nervous. But we delivered a great show. L. and Kenny were impressed with us.
#3
I told everyone I knew about my audition. What was Babyface like. a friend asked me. He was the nicest guy, I cooed. And I’ve met him twice: once backstage on Soul Train and once at a recording studio in Los Angeles. In 1998, I took a cross-country trip to Los Angeles and went to Soul Train.
#4
I was so confused after the meeting with my mother. I didn’t expect her to be so angry at me. I decided to sign the contract, and began to feel guilty. I wanted to help my sisters get their big break, but they never experienced the same level of fame that I did.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
My mother, Evelyn, was 13 when she was sent to live with her aunt Juanita in Severn, Maryland. She had always loved to sing, and she was chosen to be part of the Maryland state choir.
#2
My father, Michael Conrad Braxton, met my mother, Joan, at a YMCA dance in Baltimore. They went on their first date outside the house after weeks of talking on the phone. My father brought my mother back to the front door of Aunt Juanita’s trailer, and gently kissed her on the lips.
#3
My mother, who was a wife and a mother, had a very difficult childhood. She was always guarded about her past, but I believe that she gave up her chance at a singing career to become a wife and mother.
