This book is in memory of my Aunt Essie. I wish you were here to see what your nephew has accomplished, which you prayed over.

I love you.
"LITTLE BOOTY"
I was born 1984 in Georgetown, South Carolina as Eric Tyrone Greene, Jr. I didn't know all of my family because I was only about a year old, but I do remember my nickname being " Booty ". I remember my grandparents, especially my grandfather who had been in a war. I vividly recall him having one arm, which scared me and caused me to not let him hold me. Again, I was scared.

My mother moved to Philadelphia when I was a few months old to live with some family in the city. My father was in the army for a while, and came to live with us when he got out. The only family members I had in Philadelphia were my aunt, uncle, my cousin and a few cousins in Jersey. There was a total difference in my family from South Carolina than my family in Philadelphia. It wasn ’ t bad, of course, just different ways of living, speaking, and the music life.

My Aunt Essie, may she forever rest in peace, was one of the strongest, spiritual women in our family. She sang nothing but gospel her whole life in the church, at concerts, was a background vocalist for other artists, and was always serious about her music. Between her and my parents, they all made sure that I stayed at her house every Saturday night to attend church Sunday morning. My aunt ’ s singing, her performances, and her obedience towards God always stood out to me. It was like she knew God had her every move, as long as she had faith in Him.

As I got older my parents separated. I didn't agree with their decision but I learned to understand. The separation took a toll on me at times during school, outings, or even in the house. I stayed with my father who was a drummer in the church. He was the one who supported any and everything I wanted to do musically. So, he'd buy little keyboards or drum sets and I even had an electric kit! My father, to this day, still has my back whether with music or just life in general. I have to say I have one of the realist and coolest dads ever!

It was so much music in our church back then I can remember almost every service! I used to love watching my father play the drums as my aunt sang and everyone shouted, praised, and worshiped — basically stepping out of their own bodies to let God in. I sat behind my father as he played the drums and would go home and try to emulate exactly what he did. Of course it wasn't possible, but it didn't stop me from trying every day. My mother also sung a little bit and her voice was amazing as well.

When I realized how musically inclined my family really was I began to tap into the drums. I listened to everyone that came to our church and cassette tapes of drummers I'd never heard of, and most of what I listened to was Gospel music. So, yes, you can say my artistic foundation is Gospel music. Two groups I used to love and still do are The Winans and The Mighty Clouds of Joy. Their music and the lyrics to their songs were so intricate to me growing up. I never knew why, but I just knew it felt right!

Between the ages of 10 to 12 I began branching out, listening to fusion drummers, jazz drummers, rock drummers, and freelance drummers. During this time, I was heavily influenced by Dennis Chambers, Lil ’ John Roberts, and one of my mentors named Jamesy. I never had a chance to sit with a lot of my favorite drummers and talk to them, but I knew they talked to me through their drum playing. Seeing how everyone had their own approach to the drums made me realize that there's more than one style of drumming and thinking.

My godparents, Tameka Ferebee and James Lewis, were two of the first people to take me under their wings and show me a bigger side of music! They took me to concerts, took me to meet artists, musicians, pastors, and made sure I grew up as a mature man and musician. They introduced me to a world of music that I never knew existed. Today, I am forever grateful for them because I don't know where I would be if they ’ d never shared those experiences with me. Thank you both.
