This beautiful and informative enhanced ebook—so comprehensive it had to be split into two volumes, ebook 1 and ebook 2—offers a detailed introduction to the musical heritage of Central Asia for readers and listeners worldwide. Music of Central Asia balances "insider" and "outsider" perspectives with contributions by 27 authors from 14 countries. This stunning electronic book allows readers the opportunity to deeply engage with source material through over 180 embedded audio and video, pop-up study questions, transliterations and translations of performed texts, and direct links to the companion website (www.musicofcentralasia.org). The audio and video examples include transliterations and translations of the performed texts and a follow-along feature highlights the song lyrics in the text, as the audio samples play. This generously illustrated book is supplemented with boxes and sidebars, musician profiles, and an illustrated glossary of musical instruments, making it an indispensable resource for both general readers and specialists.

Ebook 1 includes part I, "Music and Culture in Central Asia," an introductory overview of the music and musical instruments of Central Asia, and part II, "The Nomadic World," which focuses on music and musical life in historically nomadic regions of Central Asia. Ebook 2 contains part III, "The World of Sedentary Dwellers," which focuses on music and musical life in historically settled regions of Central Asia, and part IV, "Central Asian Music in the Age of Globalization," which addresses "the future of the past," focusing on cultural revitalization and renewal, tradition-based popular music, and contemporary music inspired but not constrained by tradition.

P REFACE
The Music of Central Asia came to life as part of a larger project with an ambitiousobjective: to contribute to the revitalization and continuing evolution of musicalculture and creativity in Central Asia while bringing the region’s rich and diversemusical traditions to the attention of listeners around the world. This project, ongoing since 2000, has been spearheaded by the Aga Khan Music Initiative, a non-governmental cultural development program that supports talented musicians andmusic educators working to preserve, transmit, and cultivate their musical heritagein contemporary forms. 1 The Music of Central Asia was envisaged both as a resource for Central Asians to learn about the musical heritage of their own region(translation into local languages is planned for the future) and as an introductionto the region’s music and expressive culture for those who live beyond its borders. Itcan be used as a textbook—read systematically to build comprehensive knowledgeabout interlinked topics—or approached as a reference work forinformation onspecific musical styles, repertoires, and traditions.
Due to its length, this ebook has been divided into two volumes, though together they are meant to be a complete book. Ebook 1 contains parts I and II, while ebook 2 continues with parts III and IV . The first part, “Music and Culture in Central Asia,” offers an overview of Central Asian music and musical instruments. The second and third parts, “The Nomadic World” and “The World of Sedentary Dwellers,” survey musical life in thecontext of the two major axes of Central Asiancivilization—axes that remain influential in our own time. Through a series of chapters devoted to particular musicalgenres, styles, repertoires, and individual musicians, these sections offer a composite portrait of Central Asia’s musical heritage. The fourth section, “Central AsianMusic in the Age of Globalization,” focuses on what one might call “the future ofthe past”—how traditional forms of music-making are beingadapted, appropriated, transformed, and revitalized by a variety of contemporary actors and stakeholders in the domain of arts and culture. In each section, the aim is to presentmusic and musical heritage not simply as fixed repertoires and traditions inheritedfrom the past, but rather as the continually evolving product of dynamic culturalprocesses driven by innovative creators, trends in taste and fashion, the exigenciesof politics, and forces of social change emanating from near and far.
Deciding which repertoires and traditions to include in The Music of CentralAsia presented a challenge. First of all, what exactly do we mean by “Central Asia”?The panoply of cultural, physical, and political markers that, in various combinations, have been used to define the region underscores the imprecision of itsboundaries (definitions of Central Asia are discussed in the overview in chapter 1).Two areas that many if not most geographers would include as belonging to CentralAsia are missing in this book: Afghanistan north of the Hindu Kush Mountains, and Khorasan, which encompasses northeastern Iran and historically covered a
